Doctor Who The Games Thread #1

Thought I'd start a new thread for this, since it didn't seem to fit in any of the other threads I'm aware of.

For S5, the makers of Doctor Who decided to make a set of four adventure games with the Eleventh Doctor and Amy, sort of mini-episodes with the two main characters and various baddies. They're done in the style of First Person Shooters (third person really), but without any shooting (because this is the Doctor, after all). The main page for the games is here:

BBC - Doctor Who - The Adventure Games

The games are available to be downloaded for free for people in the UK, and for people outside the UK they're now available for a very small price (< $5 USD for the first two eps together).

I downloaded the games and played through both of the first two episodes this evening, so they're not very long. But I thought they were a decent attempt at translating Doctor Who into game form.

Has anybody else played these games yet?

What did you think of the first one?

One thing that surprised me was that they had some pretty significant elements borrowed from the classic series. Like, the fact that you collect Jelly Baby cards - that was pretty fundamentally a Fourth Doctor thing, there have been references since, but just little jokes here and there.

I played the first one, it was fun but I didn't like the timer part of the game, I have always had problems with being able to beat timers.
Don't know if I got all the cards in the game.

I haven't gotten the chance to play it yet but I've read some rather negative reviews. But I guess I will give it a chance in a few weeks

Yeah, I know what you mean about the timer parts. My computer was dragging a bit in that part because there was so much going on, and I didn't have super accurate control during that sequence, so I had to play it a few times before I could get to the right place on time.

I know I missed some cards, but what I don't know is how many of those cards you should be able to collect in those first two games.

What didn't they like about it? I thought the main problem was just that they were too short, but given that they are free/very cheap and there are four of them in total it's hard to complain about that.

I haven't seen any news yet about when the next episodes will be released. The Dalek game was released on June 2, and the Cybermen game on June 26, but nothing on the official site about what the next two episodes will be about and when they'll be released.

It's official -the next Doctor Who adventure game is called TARDIS, and will be available in the UK (for free) and elsewhere (for a small fee) on August 27:

BBC - Doctor Who - TARDIS Materialises 27 August! - News & Features

Looks like the game will involve flying the TARDIS, and exploring at least some other parts of it.

I downloaded and played game 3 the day it came out.

The good: Playing with the TARDIS console, particularly the bit at the end.

The bad: Far too short, even shorter than the other two. Related to this, the story was almost non-existent. But my main complaint - you can only visit two rooms in the TARDIS, the console room and one other.

I was hoping for more rooms to explore

and it was way too short yes...

but it was fun to play with the TARDIS console

I know the guys making the Doctor Who games were complaining because the style of their game is FPS, only it's Doctor Who so there can't be any shooting.

But this weekend I was playing one of a series of Sherlock Holmes games that's all about the story and solving puzzles, and I think the DW adventure games should have been based more on a model like that - more story, less action that involved simply ducking baddies. Oh, and the Holmes games are the complete opposite in terms of length, but I doubt they are that much more expensive to make, because the game engine itself seems rather straightforward, it's the writing that has the complexity.

I got the DW Game App today - the Mazes of Time
I was really looking forward to play this on my iPod

And it is really nice. It is nothing too fancy but I think they did a good job with it.
But what I found funny is that when the Doctor gets killed by a Cyberman (or a spike) then he immediately starts to send out this energy flashes, like when he is about to regenerate but ... so does Amy.

I still need to get Mazes of Time. I also need to get the other two Adventure games (in the US there will be a bundle of 3 & 4 once 4 comes out).

I have one and two. I've only played part of 1. Apparently I'm not intelligent enough to play it, because I get stuck and end up not being able to continue on
