Honestly not sure what I thought of this one It wasn't bad, but it probably won't ever be a favourite of mine. Going to watch it again to see if it seems better the second time.

I liked it, it had that claustrophobic feel to it that I just love, always love a good submarine story. It was sort of alien the eight passenger on some parts, and I love that they brought back the ice warriors.
I also liked Clara in this one a lot, being the voice of reason and not backing down even if she was surrounded by soldiers and the Doctor. One thing that was stuck in my mind and that it sorta makes me a bit sad now is that the new sonic screwdriver now has a red setting and then I remember River and the Library and it gets me all weepy. I guess it's coming. |

Thoroughly enjoyed that. Gripped from start to finish. Loved it and a vast improvement on last weeks terrible episode. That was truly awful, so to have such a strong episode on the back of it, makes me very happy indeed. Looking forward to next weeks

As I watched it, I kept thinking that it must have been miserable to make this episode with all that dripping water. They must've been soaked and cold for most of the shoot. The HADS bit I thought was funny, but I recognized what it was as soon as it happened. This ep seemed to have a Second Doctor theme, because the HADS and the Ice Warriors first appeared in that era. And last week had a bit of a First Doctor theme, with a reference to Susan and the fact that the god was nicknamed Grandfather. I'll be watching for Third Doctor references next week. The best part was Nicholas Briggs has yet another Doctor Who alien voice notch on his belt. I've heard him do the Ice Warriors before, it sounded a lot more conventional than some other times he's done it (a lot more ssss's and whispering). __________________

I thought it was okay. I was a bit bored at times but it was a totally okay episode.
But I wonder if the world being saved by a song will be a theme during the second half __________________

I thought the episode was uneven, some parts i enjoyed, some parts i was really really bored unfortunately. Clara proved herself to be a great companion once again who actually listens but that's not gonna be one of the episodes i'm gonna remember easily

They did the hands from the ceiling bit too many times. It's a submarine, it should be very cramped with low ceilings. The Ice Warrior shouldn't have been able to sneak up on them just from crawling on the ceiling.

because of this episode, last night I watched The Ice Warriors serial from the 2nd Doctor (the parts that are available anyway) and the novellization (you can tell that I had way too much free time) and now, the whole episode just feels to me like a HUGE tribute to that serial, from the Ice Warrior being found in a block of ice and being resucitated by a scientist hungry for recognition, to his dialog with Clara (which is very similar to the one Varga had with Victoria on this one) to the Doctor's relationship wiith the Captain being similar to the one of the Doctor with Leader Clent on TIW, just to name a few.
I have seen some people ranting on different sites on how this episode is a supposed "ripoff" of Dalek (which I don't see at all except for the humanized villain) and after seeing the original serial and reading the novellization, if anything, then Dalek was a ripoff from this. |

But not much in The Cold War reminded me of Dalek. It reminded me more of The Hungry Earth. __________________
