That was Producer John Nathan-Turner's fault.
He felt the old series needed something with sex appeal to keep the series on the air after twenty years.
Had she been older she might have challenged the producer's wishes and vision for the character. My Mom cant stand her voice either.

Which is a shame. Peri's not my least favourite companion, but I thought she should have covered up a bit when the Fifth Doctor regenerated.

I'm sure she would have.

I really enjoyed The Satan Pit and thought was quite creepy, but not so much the second time I watched it.

he is but its in a different way i see jack like river song they know they are hot where as she was kind of bimbo girl which i didnt like and it didnt fit as all the other ladies were beautiful smart people

See I gotta disagree. Jack and River are too 'in your face' annoying at times. They go OTT on making everything overally sexual whereas Peri didn't do that, nor did she use her attractiveness to her advantage and she did hold her own with the Doctor and The Master especially. So I think, while she can be a bit annoying and the accent is very inconsistent, she showed smearts, humour and bravery and was a match for anyone, friend or foe, while not making it too OTT or throwing the sexuality in the audience's face (with the exception of certain costumes...)

I tend to agree with Tim on this one. I still think they tried something different with Peri in the vein of how they made Tegan Jovanka tough and Peri stood up to her opponents even if they lusted after her. She definitely never used it to her advantage and they gave her proper outfits to wear by end of Season 22....
