I loved the episode more in idea than in execution. I think it is because they have to keep it PG-13. Very dark themes but presented in a way that is suitable for a family audience. The story was extremely dark but it wasn't quite filmed that way.
She founded a leper colony and took care of people as they slowly went blind and became crippled and deformed. She took care of and then watched helplessly as her three children died of the black plague which wiped out 30-60% of Europe (75-200 million people) in the 1300s. She watched her lover/husband/father of her children age and die. What do you think was so horrible in those pages she would tear them out? Maybe it involved rape. Ashildr keeps talking about how brilliant she is but how can that be when she has a limited memory? Shouldn't she have forgotten most of the things she has learned how to do? Or does she only forget personal things the way that some people can remember how to drive/swim but not the name of childhood pet or if they've ever already seen a certain film? Quote:
Interesting that Sam assumed The Doctor was Ashildr's father and then here we have Ashildr dressing exactly like Clara's mother. __________________

Some fans think Nina (Asylum of the Daleks , The bells of Saint John ) is Ashildr.
Oswin said "the first boy I ever fancied was named Rory. Actually, she was named Nina." Angie Maitland asked Clara if she could go to Nina's house and that Clara can call Nina's mom if she wants. So we know Nina is young, probably a teenager. Ashildr's journals really make me want to try journaling again. Most people think they have uninteresting lives but nobody does. Imagine someone from the middle ages reading about cars, planes, elevators, x-ray machines, lightbulbs, tvs, cellphones, etc. It would sound either extremely futuristic or extremely magickal. __________________

I still don't know how in this episode Ashildr can have 800 years worth of knowledge when she forgets most of her memories after a few decades. She kept talking about how brilliant and clever she is and the writers were making it seem like it was because of how long she has lived but if her only access to her own experience is via the journals, it doesn't make her any different from us mortals who read a lot of biographies on historical people.
