deeply satisfying "Gilmore Girls" finale, which also airs Tuesday (7 p.m., WGN-Ch. 9). And there's no way to subtly ask this question: When is Lauren Graham going to get an Emmy? A SAG award? An employee-of-the-month plaque? Any recognition for her continually great work as Lorelei Gilmore? That she deftly handles the show's fast-paced, pop-culture laden dialogue is nothing new to fans of the 5-year-old show. That she handles emotional material well -- and there's a lot of it Tuesday, as she deals with the fallout of her daughter Rory's uncharacteristic decision [spoiler]-- is also not news. What's most notable -- and unheralded -- about Graham's portrayal of Lorelai is its restraint. "Gilmore Girls" can sometimes have gaudy plots (and annoying plots, most of which involve Lorelai's pal Sookie), but the heart of the show is difficult, sometimes downright painful family relationships. Graham finds all the layers in every one of her scenes, but she doesn't overplay them. In two key moments in the finale, one with her parents and one with her boyfriend, diner owner Luke, the fast-talking Lorelai says nary a word. But in both scenes, the look on her face speaks volumes. And as delivered by Graham, the last line of this well-crafted episode -- OK, I'll admit it -- brought a tear to my eye.

I´m getting all emotional only reading about Lauren´s amazing acting in the finale, I bet I´ll be a wreck when I actually see it. Tissues are a must!

Thanks for bringing that over The "adding layers to her scenes" bit is so spot-on and applies week in and week out, not just for the finale I'd say. I love that in this instance the key moments with the most impact are Lorelai in silence rather than discussion.

I wish we could compile all of the best ones and make them into a pamphlet sort of thing. (Probably more for our satisfaction and peace of mind than for her, hehe.) If I were her assistant/manager I'd make sure she read them buy placing them all over and sending them in the mail and then I'd get fired for being so annoying.

From that USA Today review of the finale--the rest is too spoilery:

...I'm certain no actor could convey the mountain-to-valley emotional ride Lorelai endures in this hour better than Lauren Graham. [...] ...whenever Gilmore threatens to become too glib or coy, Graham's wit and honesty rein it back in. She's the rare star who can bring a show both light and depth [...]

Question: How would you rate the Gilmore Girls season finale on a scale of 1-10? — Daisy Ausiello: I would give the episode a solid 9 and Lauren Graham's performance in it a 10. I mean, between her devastation at learning that Rory was dropping out of Yale (bombshell No. 1) to her knee-jerk proposal to Luke (bombshell No. 2), my former costar solidified her status as TV's most underrated actress. I guess what I'm trying to say is, "Get your act together, Emmy!"

Question: So, as depressing as this is, is it pretty much true that Lauren Graham's chances at an Emmy nod are slim to none? — Megan Ausiello: Unless those bonehead Emmy voters wake up and stop disrespecting WB shows, I fear they are. That said, maybe this'll be the year TV Guide's Dream Emmy Ballot makes a difference. The results of our fourth annual wish-list will be revealed in the June 5 issue of TV Guide magazine and, rest assured, Lauren made the cut.

I think I need a minute alone with my Kleenex. [Sniffling and wiping eyes. Taking a deep, deep breath.] OK, I think I'm good. But you won't mind if I get all verklempt, right? 'Cause I'm pretty sure I can't write about Lorelai asking Luke to marry her (!!!) without getting totally choked up. How amazing and unexpected was that? Lorelai has finally come of age, shedding the self-doubt and flightiness that made her oblivious to the perfect thing right in front of her. As Luke rambled on about his master plan to get Rory back into Yale, we literally watched the transformation come across her face. (Lauren Graham deserves an Emmy nod for that scene alone.) It was the perfect ending to the best season yet. (Please, oh, please, we don't want to wait an entire year for this wedding! November sweeps would be perfect, thanks.) Sure, I'm still swooning over the proposal, but this ep was incredibly bittersweet. Lorelai and Rory, whose lives have always merged so perfectly, have veered terribly off-course. From her new Richie-Rich Yalie friends to her very Richie-Rich boyfriend to her new living arrangement with her Richie-Rich grandparents, Rory is proving to be a true blue-blooded Gilmore, much to her mother's dismay. And now that Emily and Richard have their moneyed hands on Rory, Lorelai's lost yet another piece of what was once her sweet, down-to-earth daughter. (How bad did you feel for Lorelai, watching from outside as Rory put her books away inside the pool house?) Perhaps mom does need to let go a little and trade one bond for another. Good thing Luke's right there waiting with his toolbox, the Twickum house and his dreams of their children filling up their home. (There I go, getting all teary-eyed again.) I can't wait until next season. — Robin Honig

That's a good question. I can't remember if we ever actually got an official list. I thought usually we just made a note of which Emmy screeners showed up Ebay. SS for sure though, the WB pres let everyone know that already.

Question: Whaaat? You're leaving us hanging as to whether Scott Patterson is returning to Gilmore Girls? Tell us what you know, or we'll send Nekkid Kirk screencaps. — Anne Price Ausiello: Uncle! OK, when I was on the set in March, Scott Patterson informed me that, unlike Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel, who are under contract for two more seasons, his deal expires at the end of next season — the show's sixth. "I'm out after six," he said. "[My staying] depends on several key factors that I'm not at liberty to discuss. It's definitely not a certainty [that I'll stick around]. I'd like it to all work out. I'm thinking positively, but we'll see. The next few months will be crucial in that decision-making process." As loyal readers of this column know full well, everyone (Lauren, Alexis, Amy Sherman-Palladino) would like to see the show go for seven seasons. Could Patterson really envision Luke going AWOL during GG's final year? Sadly, he could. "I don't think Luke and Lorelai are the end-all and be-all of Gilmore Girls," he confessed. "I think it would survive without me. It's not really up to me, actually. I can't say anymore than that. I probably said too much already." So what's a dogged reporter to do when an actor clams up just as he's about to get to the good stuff? He goes over said actor's head and gets his boss to fill in the blanks. And fill them in she did. "Scott is not just one of the town anymore," says exec producer Amy Sherman-Palladino, all but confirming that money is the sticking point. "He's become very, very, very, very — how many verys can I put? — important to the show, and I think everybody knows that. "Contracts are a tricky, funny thing," she adds. "It's a business. The one thing I can say is I don't think anybody — studio or network — does not know how valuable he is. I don't anticipate there being any problem, because I think that, at the end of the day, you gotta make a show, and somebody's gotta pay for somebody to show up. I would be very surprised if a seventh year came and we didn't have Scott Patterson on the show. I'd be kinda stunned."

I can't imagine GG without Luke. Does this mean there is definatly going to be a season 7?
