People.com, in its 1st Sundance report, included BoA in the list of "other Sundance entries that sound promising":

Quote:
Birds of America: Matthew Perry, Hilary Swank, Ginnifer Goodwin and Lauren Graham in a comedy about excessively dysfunctional siblings.

That's the same article that gjoni posted, GGNews just changed the heading of it and highlighted the paragraph regarding Lauren.

Hi all,

I'm new here, well kind of because I always just read the posts, but a few pages back I found something I would like to comment:

Quote:
Lauren Graham also came in at the last second, and she's used to having to do a lot of the internal work on her own. She's very sensitive and private, and these qualities gave her an edge in the story -- an outsider quality -- that she was able to use. She doesn't like to be reassured, and when she's having difficulty, she likes a little bit of room around her. I tried to respect that without abdicating my responsibilities. She had a fine-tuned hypervigilance about not turning her character into a cliché, and there was indeed the danger of that in the text; the wife is such a Swiss-watch of a person, high-strung and better-behaved (outwardly) than the sibs. Lauren functioned as a kind of dramaturge for the well-being of reality and truthfulness in the story itself, and I'm hugely grateful to her. She gives a bravura performance, as you'll see.

Quote:
Maybe she feels she doesn't have to be reassured because she knows already??
I don't think it's about her not needing the reassurance because she knows she is the best (which she is, as we all know ) but about her not feeling reassured by those comments, thus not liking them.
From everything I read about Lauren it has to do with the way she works. She didn't have a career where everything fell into her lap, from the beginning she had to work hard for everything she achieved, she really learned acting from the basics, had to fight for the success and deal with a lot of disappointments over the years. And I think thats something you can see in her acting. She knows what she is doing, which roles she can play and which she can't. I contrast to many other actresses I have never seen her in a role she wasn't able to handle, there were movies I didn't like at all but I never thought, she chose something she wasn't able to do. So she has a good self-assesment, which is very important, especially for her early career. Back then there wasn't a lot reassurance because there wasn't a lot of success and her only goal probably was to be satisfied with herself and how the scenes played out. And if someone comes up to her now saying "Great scene, Lauren!" it doesn't help her, if she doesn't think so herself. Of course there probably are people from whom she likes and needs reassurance, like her family and her manager or people she worked with for a long time, but I don't think the general reassurance from just any director on set helps her.
So I wouldn't say that the fact that she doesn't like to be reassured automatically means that she is totally convinced of her acting ability and thinks she is the best anyway, I just think, she depends on herself and her own jugement and learnt how to solve her problems with a scene on her own (hence the needing space to figure it out). That's just the way she works. It might not be the best, because it probably often makes her seem arrogant and self-centered on set. But I can imagine all of that being a result of how she even stayed in the business for so long without being successful: Giving everything to be able to like herself and her work and not caring too much about what other people think.

I'm sorry for the long post (and my english that I'm sure is full of mistakes), but I really needed to say that. I hope I didn't offend anyone with my speculations, I really admire Lauren for her abilities and for the great personality I assume she has!

Anna
