Welcome to the Candy thread, where we celebrate the wonderful and unique relastionship of Michael Guerin and Maria De Luca on the cancelled TV Drama, Roswell.

I agree. I totally, totally agree! It's just not true that Liz would want to investigate so much about it whereas maria would just sit back. she's so much more of a fighter than liz could ever be. i think the writers were trying to give liz a little more character (and screen time), but that was totally unlike both the characters.

Continuing about Departure and the whole Liz investigation thing.... I've always thought that Maria and Alex have had a much stronger relationship than Liz and Alex ever did (I thought I was the only one but then I read Doc's "Those Left Behind, and yay!, she agrees with me). So, I think that if anyone would believe that Alex didn't kill himself, it would be Maria (of course, in my twisted world, i believe that she only moved on and made peace with the death of alex because he would want her to. i think that she would move on and live her life double now because alex would want her to. that's how special i think their relationship was. and when you compare it to alex and liz..... yikes, my liz issues are showing!!) would be the one to investigate it. i am all for liz trying to find out the truth, but i was disappointed that maria wasn't all for it too. it is a very important characteristic of maria, being loyal to her friends and always wanting the truth, and i think that the writers made a huge mistake not rememebring it and adding it to the storyline. That was one of my issues with the last few episodes of season 2.

Interesting points. Well, I have huge problems with the whole investigation into Alex's death (as I think I've mentioned a few dozen times [img]smilies/lol.gif[/img] ), but not so much with Maria's actions. People grieve in different ways. Maria allowed herself to feel sadness and loss over Alex's death. Liz did not. She threw herself into her search for Alex's killer, shutting herself off emotionally from everyone else and really only showing anger towards the others when they didn't agree with everything she said (with the one very large exception of her breakdown at the end of CYN). This was Liz's way of dealing with her own sorrow and guilt (because I'm sure that Liz felt guilty both for dragging Alex into the "alien abyss" and for the fact that in the original timeline, Alex survived, although the show never brought EotW back up again) - by not dealing. It hurt too much for her, so she shut down. Maria didn't do that. She felt Alex's loss and showed it. I can honestly see either reaction as being realistic under the circumstances. (That was something I thought CYN did a good job of - showing how different people react to loss in different ways.) And as upset as I was with Liz's accusations at Alex's memorial (and no matter how she tried to backtrack later, she did basically blame the aliens for being responsible for Alex's death - something which I thought was awful, especially as it concerns Isabel), which was really not the right time or way to get into it, I could understand. She was too upset to be tactful (she even says so later).

But honestly, Liz had no reason at the time of CYN to be so certain that Alex was killed by an alien. Yes, it was a possibility. But so was the accident theory. The only reason Liz had for her certainty was that Alex knew about aliens. If he knew about aliens, then he must have been killed by evil aliens. That's not exactly argument-proof logic. (Oh, there was also the torn picture of Leanna-is-not-Leanna, but that's not exactly proof of an alien killer, either - Valenti sees it more as support of the police theory.) It was only later that she started finding the evidence that things with Alex's exchange student trip wasn't as it seemed. So I can't blame Maria for not instantly alienating all her other friends in order to go on a wild search in support of a theory that she didn't believe. With what they knew in CYN, Alex could very well have died in an accident. Neither Maria, nor Michael, believed for one second that Alex killed himself. Maria leaned towards it being an accident, and officially at least, so did Michael (although I suspect that Michael was open to the possibility of it being an alien, but didn't want the humans rushing into a confrontation with an alien killer). Once Liz had actual reasons to show about how Alex never went to Sweden, then Maria came around and helped her investigate (and it's a good thing that Maria and Michael were there to help Liz at the end, or else she not only wouldn't have solved the mystery, but she would have ended up dead when that alien bomb thing went off).

It's obviously a good thing that Liz did investigate and find out the truth about Alex's killer. My problem has always been with the way she acted during the investigation (not to mention the huge plot holes caused both during the investigation and with the solution to the mystery [img]smilies/rolleyes.gif[/img] ). If Liz had approached the investigation at the start with a bit more concern for other's feelings (especially Maria and Sean, not to mention Isabel who was already feeling terribly enough over Alex dying), then perhaps others (like Maria) would have been more open to listening to what she was saying. Then again, if Max hadn't instantly shot down her idea of it being an alien who killed Alex, then maybe Liz wouldn't have felt so threatened and acted the way that she did. Both Liz and Max were very confrontational and single-minded throughout. But I can see where they were both coming from - Liz channelling her grief into her search for Alex's killer, Max terribly afraid that it was his fault that Alex had died. Guilt and loss can make people act in ways that they later regret, and nobody is thinking logically when they're in so much pain. Both of them were acting too emotionally at the time, and both made mistakes.

shobhna guerin - No, your ideas weren't stupid. Goodness knows, there's plenty of stuff to discuss/debate about there at the end of Season 2. [img]smilies/lol.gif[/img] I do agree with you, by the way, about Maria and Alex having a stronger friendship than Alex and Liz. After the first half of Season 1, we really don't see as much of the Alex/Liz friendship, which is rather a shame. Liz gets pretty swept up in her relationship with Max.

I agree with Shobna... I think it would have been more in character for Maria to investigate.

If Max had been right, investigating would have been a minimal risk. If Liz was right - and I think she had plenty of evidence, even if you don't count OTM - then by not investigating, there was a high probability she or Maria could be next. And the aliens refused to investigate the issue or protect them. I have a lot of Liz issues, but I thought she was right in investigating, and right in pushing very hard. It was a matter of life or death to investigate, and find out what happened immediately, before more people died. She was right not to wait for a better time or to be in a frame of mind where she could be more tactful. For once Liz was honest about sharing what she knew, and I think it was - for once - the right decision.

Anyway, the best thing for Isabel would have been to throw herself into the investigation, until they could use the Granolith to bring Alex back.

I definitely felt short-changed on the Maria/Alex friendship. Maria is the one who wanted to tell Alex from the beginning (I think Isabel was the only one she convinced).

I liked how Maria wanted to let Alex in on the secret right away. It was a nice friendship thing. But do you mean that Maria convinced Isabel that they should tell Alex? I don't remember Maria ever talking with Isabel about that. I thought Isabel decided they should let Alex in after the dreamwalk, and she dreamwalked Alex after her conversation with Liz about whether or not Alex was likely to cave and tell anyone what little he knew about the whole situation. [img]smilies/look.gif[/img] It's been a while since I've seen Season 1 - am I forgetting something? Or am I misunderstanding what you're saying?
