And I think he was capricious too, I mean I read that he was outraged by the reaction of the fans towards Departure ... and he knew that after all that there was no way that Max and Liz were not together in the next season.

I never had a problem with Departure. I mean it's better than how "Destiny" ended. I can fastforward certain scenes and concentrate on the bittersweetness, and Liz saving the day. And they left the idea that Max and Liz were making it work. Yet, it would be hard, and they would never be able to go back to being who they were... despite trying.

Destiny is a great 2/3 of a episode, and the last 10 minutes ruin it. Liz walking away. Despite Max being just tortured. I can see why she would do it. But at least Departure left the liklihood that they would make it work.

Thankfully we had Season 3 to get that ending. To see their happy ending.

I refuse to believe that everything could have ended with Destiny, they obviously knew that there had been at least one more season imo

No thats why the fans did the Roswell Tabasco campaign and begged the WB to renew the show.

And shows like to play ground to try to bluff the network into not pulling the plug. If you have cliffhanger. You gotta bring the show back, right? Today, there are a lot of shows that pull that same stunt, and lose when the show is still cancelled. But yeah the tabasco sauce campaign saved the show.

To think that the show could have ended with Liz walking away from Max. It makes me appreciate Departure all the more because at least it wasn't easy, but they were in each other's arms and you knew they would have tried.

Thankfully the show learned, and gave the show a proper last episode in Graduation. If only it could have been longer, and we could have seen the aftermath. But at least Max and Liz were together, and engaged, and then married.

We got lucky.

I think it is already public knowledge that I hate Departure with a passion & I know we got lucky at the very end.. but at what cost?

At the cost of knowing that it could be worse than what we ended up. Liz saved the day. And ultimately they didn't just get over it. They had to work at it, and there was a lot of angst to get through before they managed to make.

We got another season. And a chance at that happy ending. Which we were denied in Season 1, and Season 2.

Max ultimately make a huge sacrifice. So, they got their chance.

Depature is not perfect. I did like how Max immediate response was to defend Liz to Tess' fury. She was always on his pedastal, even if it wasn't always warranted,

I wish the end of Season 2 was done differently. I don't know what they were thinking? But given Liz walked away in Destiny. I will take Departure because at least they had a chance, and they did get their chance.

Even if Liz saved the day they did her so dirty - Max couldn't even apologize to her & then we had to watch those first episodes of s3 immediately after departure, so wrong.

Sometimes I wonder if they really tried to save the show ... they did everything they could to make me hate Max and Max/Liz in the process ... but there they were wrong, despite all my love for them it was not going to change

I agree it was a mess. However in the end it was all worth it. 21 years later we are still talking about Max and Liz.
