A Tribute to us Dreamers on The Cherishing Thread and our contribution to Fan Forum History
~Posted by our Fan Forum Administrator Jerry D~

Hi everyone! I don’t know if you all know this,
but the Cherishing Max & Liz thread was the very first shipper thread in all of Fan Forum!
I used to think the Dawson and Joey shipper thread on the Dawson’s Creek board was the very first shipper thread here,
but the person who started that thread actually got the idea from this thread,
so you Max and Liz fans (and I consider myself to be a Max and Liz fan)
started a tradition of expressing your love and support for your favorite couple
that has been copied on almost every board here, so bravo to all of you!
I’m glad to see that so many people still post on this thread. :)

"There couldn't have been a better way to end the series.
The talented young cast make the most of their moments,
with Behr and Appleby especially strong as the starcrossed lovers Max and Liz.
When the two look at each other across the room
during a moment of great danger,
their look is so full of love that the moment is one that seems destined
from the very first episode when Max saved Liz's life and we discovered how much he'd always loved her.
And that's what this series was really about
~Kathie Huddleston, SciFiWeekly

Quotes from Cast&Crew on Max&Liz (Jason and Shiri)

Who is your favorite Roswell character and why?
Ron Moore: I'm still in love with all of them.
But I will say that I find the Liz/Max relationship to be the heart and soul of the series.
I think that both Shiri Appleby and Jason Behr are tremendous talents
and I never get tired of watching them on camera.
- Ronald D. Moore, co-executive producer and writer - from "Ron Moore Q&A"

"It was more about... without you i couldn't become the person i am now.
And I think that throughout the season no matter what has happened.. good or bad..
it made these people who they are. i think that's the way it is with life.
That choices that we make in our lives and the people that we know help us,
in one way or another, be the people we are.
And that moment he was thanking her for helping him open his eyes to a completely different world.
She's a sane voice, some sort of reasoning.

The person that he trusts the most is Liz who knows him better, I think, than anybody"
- Jason Behr (about the last scene from A Roswell Christmas Carol)

"The Max-Liz connection works so well, as is so popular with "Roswell" fans,
because, in Moore's opinion, "It's very romantic in the classic sense of the word.
Max is a young man from another planet, with secrets. He saved her life in the first episode,
and they became soulmates across time and space. It's a classic set-up.
Beyond that, the appeal of their relationship
has a great deal to do with the chemistry between Shiri Appleby and Jason Behr."
- Ron Moore, co-executive producer & writer Ron Moore talks Roswell in Dec Starlog.

"The episodes that I have really found have worked in that way are the pilot episode,
which works really well because that’s really, to me, Romeo and Juliet.
It’s really about two people meeting and falling in love, but not being able to be together, and I think it grabs you in that way."
- Jason Katims, executive producer and creator talks about Roswell episodes
that he thinks is a real top television moment.

"Heart and Soul of Roswell, I think that Jason [Katims] would share this opinion,
has always been the relationship between Max and Liz.
That's where the plot begins. He saved her life and he exposes himself at the same time.
The love between those two characters is fundamental to the show's success.
- Ron Moore, Roswell season 2 DVD, Ask Not commentary

"When we did this scene you just kind of expect that this scene's going to be great.
You know it's gonna be great because their chemistry is so good together
but then watching it a few years later and seeing how good they are together,
you know that doesn’t come off - It's not that easy for that to happen.
When you have chemistry... we were very lucky with the two of them,
what great chemistry the two of them have together on the screen
For three years they could still do a scene like that and could still kinda get you. That’s pretty amazing."
- Jason Katims, graduation commentary of the proposal scene

"I thought he was an amazing choice for Max.
He really does have that intensityjust the way he looks at Liz — and you feel the longing.
I always felt that Max was cautious, responsible and a good person, but with all this bubbling underneath.
I think he really conveys that, which is hard to do,because it's all internal."
- Melinda Metz (Soap Opera Weekly)

"I love that! He's a kid! He's a kid, he doesn't care about his "destiny",
he's not captain Kirk. He doesn't care about his unseen planet he just found out about.
What he cares about is a very human thing. He cares about this girl. He loves her and she loves him. It's the world to him!
That's what is primary in his mind.
And I think that's what the show is about. That's what brings people to this show is this strong love between them"
- Ronald Moore about the "I'm coming for you Liz" scene- Ask Not commentary

"That moment to me seems like a transcendent moment.
It's the gift he gives to her. It's him thanking her for being there for him and being a friend.
And it's not a moment about them getting back together as a boyfriend and girlfriend.
It's beyond that(...) he's able to go to her even with everything that they've been through"
- Jason Katims - A Roswell Christmas Carol commentary of the "I believe in you" scene

"The moment you look at Shiri you know why Max is in love with her: she was so REAL"
- Thania St. John- The Balance commentary

"And then enter Liz. And you know we're playing.
One of the great things about season two was playing Max chasing Liz.
You know I thought that was a really fun thing.
I think it really said a lot about his feelings for her. That he wasn't willing to give it up
and that, you know, you were waiting for her resolve to weaken and hoping she's gonna go back into his arms."
- Ronald Moore about the "I'm coming for you Liz" scene; Ask Not commentary

"We're going to play things a little lighter in some instances.
But the relationships are still going to carry forward, because they are the heart and soul of the show.
The Liz-Max relationship is front and center, right from the first episode."
- Ronald Moore's interview

"People will go to any length if they love someone..."
-- These two people. They weren't acting at this point. This was real stuff."
- David Nutter, Blood Brother's commentary

"Look at how great these two are together. Romeo and Juliet"
- David Nutter - Secrets and Lies commentary

"I love the music in this episode--especially the love theme between Max and Liz.
This was just magical stuff
and I think...I know that with the great combination of Snuffy Walden and Joe Williams...
I think there was a real great musical fanatic that really helped, I think, bond these two characters
and also get a sense of sadness because of the fact that they can never ultimately be together.
I think it pulls the audience in even more...
- David Nutter

"and here it comes.
That's the moment where they know in their hearts that they're in love with each other.
They've never said it. He doesn't actually say it now either.
But what he's telling her is 'I'm breaking up with you because I'm in love with you'
- and the pain in her heart right now is making her angry yet she understands.
But she's still so alone when he walks down that ladder...
and we know that they belong together and they're in love
and what Max is doing right now is for the good of both of them.
And half way through our first season we've broken them up
and yet we've completely allowed them to profess their love for each other at the same time
We've given ourselves more fodder for the back half of the season because the love story really needed a wrench thrown into it.
We wanted to see what it was like for them to be so happy so that we would know ultimately
what they needed to search for and find and live through the pain to get there again
- Thania St. John- The Balance commentary, last scene when M&L broke up

Q: My question is about the amazing looks you give Max (Jason) during your scenes together.
What are you thinking or what experiences do you draw from for those steamy eyes you have?
A: (Shiri Appleby): While Jason and I are looking into each other's eyes
I just think about the most pure love possible because their relationship is based strictly on the heart
What they share is what I someday hope to find.
- Shiri Appleby, Fandemonium Q & A

He is absolutely wonderful,” raves Appleby. “A very gracious gentleman.
We have become very good friends and I really admire him.
He really holds my hand through a lot of this stuff.
He’s a very down-to-Earth and great guy.”
- Xpos magazine #42 interview Jason Behr / Shiri Appleby - Roswell

"Unlike some actors who insist they can play a convincing love scene with someone they hate,
Behr, who claims to have a natural rapport with Appleby,
feels a friendly chemistry is essential.

"I mean, there's only so far that the acting can take you if you're looking into someone's eyes
and you don't want to be in their presence," he says.
- Jason Behr Copes With Teenage Alienation

Q: This season you had some heavy make-out scenes with your co-star, Shiri Appleby. What are those like to shoot?
A:"It's always an odd thing,
but Shiri and I have gotten to know each other so well over the last nine months
that there's nothing uncomfortable about it
- Jason Behr,

"If I may be honest, I like older women and Shiri is 5 years younger than me.
But I must confess that I had to go sit down
when I saw a pic of Shiri where she looked amazingly like Audrey Hepburn!

As a child I must have watched Breakfast at Tiffany's like a 100 times.
I had all those years a major crush on that actress.
Shiri does look amazingly like my ideal woman."
- Jason Behr

Q: What made you want to be on 'Roswell', besides the fact that it was a major gig?
A: When I first read the script I immediately understood what they were going for
- the mystery, the suspense, the relationships, the unrequited love story.
I related to Max's search for the truth about himself, about life, about his place in this world, which I think everybody goes through."
Q: Your character's a virgin, right?
A: "Oh yeah. The first time he's ever kissed somebody was when he kissed Liz
and they had such an intense connection.
I can't imagine what would happen if they ever had sex!"
- Jason Behr; Behring It All,; Star, October 18, 2000

Q: What is going to happen with you and Liz? Any hints, please, please, pretty please?
Jason Behr: I'm not exactly sure what's going to happen with Liz.
We've been -- we've been exploring that relationship for, like, the first part of the year basically,
just trying to -- any relationship you get into is complicated,
especially that of what you think is supposed to be that true love,
that one special person.

And we've been slowly but surely allowing them to get closer and closer and closer.
But just -- it's like Murphy's Law. When things start to get just at that moment of being perfect,
something is going to happen.
I don't know exactly what that is.
But right now Liz and Max are very, very close and
very much happy together, regardless of the circumstances they're in.

- Jason Behr; AOL Live!, April 17, 2000

"I felt like Jason Behr and I had such a unique chemistry.
He just walked in and we started reading together, it was just there"
- Shiri Appleby; Lula Magazine Interview

Shiri's on-screen chemistry with Jason makes Liz's scenes with Kyle seem as passionate as a warn glass of milk!
- quoted from “Crash Into Me: The World of Roswell

"It's kind of weird because we've been making out for three years now," she laughs.
"It's like kissing someone you've been married to for a really long time.
It becomes second nature.
- Shiri Appleby; Star Crossed Lover; 2001

"The heart and soul of the series remains
the relationship between Max and Liz
which is where everything more or less began.
In many ways, everything that happens on the show
even if Max and Liz are not front and center
pivots around that relationship."
- Jason Katims&Ron Moore, Season Two Begins;

"What I can say is I consider the Liz and Max relationship
the central love story in the series.

Even the deepest of relationships has its ups and downs,
so what I find interesting is to track their relationship
even when they're not technically together.

For example, the moment between Max and Liz
at the end of the Christmas episode
seems more poignant with them being apart
than it would have been if they were together."
- Jason Katims; The WB Sessions (season 2)

"We wanted to get to somewhere between these two
because we felt the audience deserved to know
what was going to happen with Max & Liz.
I didn’t think it was fair to just send them off not really knowing.

I remember seeing this happen in Superman
when I was a kid in the show where he turned coal into a diamond
and that always like stuck with me.
Like the magic of that, the power of that
and so I thought it was a cool idea here,
I thought it would be this very romantic gesture."
- Jason Katims; Graduation DVD Commentary

"You know this is just one of those images that you have
when you’re breaking a story, when you’re writing.
When you know where you’re going to end,
it always helps you in writing it and
I sort of knew, in writing this story, that I wanted to get to..
I wanted to get to this image of them being married & driving away in the van
- Jason Katims; Graduation DVD Commentary

"The thing that really does work in this episode
that I’m very proud of is this kind of scene.
There is the emotion between the characters,
between our main characters
that sort of comes through & Max & Liz, you know,
sort of rediscovering each other."
- Jason Katims; Graduation DVD Commentary ("what a great mind" scene)

"Liz and Max are just enjoyin the hell out of each other
and i think that they really played this scene nicely.
Here's a scene that, actually, the director took and ran with
and i think that he captured these moments
between the two of them so beautifully,
and you really wanted these two people to be together.
This was cute [Liz cleans up Max's face]"
- Thania St. John- The Balance commentary

"Thematically "the balance" was not only supposed to be
about the alien balance that we get to in the end
but how, as a teenager or anybody in life with a relationship
how do you balance the intensity of the feeling
that you have for one other person
with the way you have to be with the rest of the world?

How do you take this moment in time
that you share with only one other human being
and then be able to go into the other part of your world
and still feel balanced and whole?"

- Thania St. John- The Balance commentary

"I would love to do a roswell reunion. Do you think liz and max have had little alien babies yet?"
- Shiri Appleby on her Twitter May 2010

Liz: Max, the day that you saved my life, your life just ended.
Max: No, that was the day my life began. Liz, when I was in that room, and they did what they did to me.
You're what kept me alive.
The thought of you. The way your eyes look into mine. Your smile. The touch of your skin. Your lips.
Knowing you has made me human.
Whether I die tomorrow or fifty years from now, my destiny is the same: it's you. I want to be with you, Liz. I love you.
Liz: I love you.

Because even if they tried to change the future in the end they still loved each other and married in both lifetimes!

Happy Anniversary Max and Liz!

Proposal- (Assuming this was the Future Max timeline Max would give Liz his ring after Graduation according to Departure.)
Max: I always thought when we graduated I would give you my ring. (handing her the pendant they found at Atherton's)
It looks like I won't graduate, so this is something from where I'll be.

Future Max Wedding- Took place in Vegas at a Elvis Wedding Chapel.Eloped at 19.
Reception-Spent the night singing and dancing in some dive outside Phoenix.
Wedding song- I Shall Believe by Sheryl Crow.

If they had twelve days to live because they graduated on June 12th then Max might of proposed to Liz on May 31st or June 1st.

Proposal- May 2002- Liz's Balcony in Graduation. Max made a homemade diamond for Liz from coal after seeing the trick done in the movie Superman III.

Max: ...A trick I learned from Superman. Let's see if it really works.

[Liz half way smiles, and is watching him, curious. He picks a charcoal briquette out of the cooker and encloses it in his hand. With great effort he squeezes it, and bright white energy emanates from his fist. After a moment, he wipes the object in his hand on the bottom of his shirt. Max slowly turns back to face Liz, then walks over to her. Holding her gaze, he gets down on one knee, and holds out the diamond he has just made.]

Max: Liz... they're taking our home from us. ...They want to kill us... and... they might. ...But when I look in your eyes, I... I don't feel angry... or... deprived. ...I feel like the luckiest half-human on the planet. You're pure... you're... you're true... and... you're real. And right now that seems like the only thing that's important. ...I want to be with you Liz... forever.
Liz: ...Forever may only be twelve days...
Max: --Then we'll take those twelve days... (He places the diamond in Liz's palm and closes her hand around it.) ...and we'll live twelve life times.
Max: ...Liz Parker... will you marry me?
Liz: ...Yes.

Wedding- June 2002 -We know this from Graduation because they graduate from West Roswell High on June 12th. Also
Liz said she would marry Max after Graduation. The Wedding took place at the Desert Rose Wedding Chapel. Married at 18.
Tribute Date- May 14,2002 when the final episode of Roswell called Graduation aired.

Liz: Oh, and I guess I should tell you that... Max and I did eventually tie the knot.

Love the title...

To me, Busted and their action in the early part of Season 3 is all part of their journey. They couldn't commit, and find their happy ending if they didn't go through all the crap they did. Now, some of it was extreme. But then I think the Liz and Max of the Pilot, and Season 1. To steal a fake diamond, and to break into a convenience store with a gun would be extreme. But the Max and Liz who went through Season 2, and the grief of Alex's death and being pushed and proded... not that far fetched. Liz already had shown her degrees of criminality when she broke into the school for Alex's exchange documentation. And many other things they were pushed into doing, or did it on a whim without truly thinking the consequences...

Now the convenience store robbery was a hard one because it was open all night. And they needed to get down there, to see if the ship was there... But still, the Bonnie and Clyde-esque of the mission was a way of making the stakes higher, show they aren't kids anymore. To make the parents suspicious. And not oblivious the actions of their kids. And to send Max out on his own, and put some distance in his relationship with his parents. Which is the opposite of the close knit family he had earlier in the series...

They all made mistakes. Made choices that could have gotten into trouble if they had gotten caught.

So to me Max and Liz's decisions in the early part of Season 3 was not that far fetched given how things were going, and the extremes they were being pushed to...

If it had stayed at the WB, and not been cancelled. We might have seen fallout from Future Max, and more of a fallout of Max and Liz coming back together. But because they were on a new network, trying to grab new views (even though the new network UPN was seen on less televsions than the WB), so they went for the big bang. A Bonnie and Clyde Max and Liz. And rushing them back together, without talking about the big ticket items. And leaving everything for Liz to explode about later...

They were no longer the kids they had been when Max saved Liz from a bullet, and it opened a whole new world for her, and them. They were different, older, wiser and making rash decisions all in the name of being pushed to greater heights, and not all of those decisions had great consequences.

Alot of Season 3 was because they were on a new network, and the network didn't care about Roswell. And Katims tried to get the show back to a more Season 1 feel, and it was too late...

They tried. By not having Tess OR the baby around. It was just a consequence, and something hanging over the heads to make that their reunion wasn't easy, and was still fraught with tension. Because they weren't talking about it. What would happen if the baby was found, like tomorrow. Instead they dwelled on it and let it feed a lot of resentment, so Liz could eventually explode. Which made things better. Of course Max also had die and turn into dust before they started to make peace with it.

So I think they tried to bring it back to Season 1 essence, but they were all older and had made choices that weren't that bright or evidence they were growing up, good and bad. They couldn't go back to the yesterday. They had to deal with the now, and the future. And unfortunately they were trying to push the pain and hurt away, and tried to concentrate on being together...

Unfortunately it didn't help...

But then nothing the show would have done in Season 3 would have saved the show, given UPN had no loyalty to it. Now the show could have a shot at being saved, but then...nope. They wanted Buffy, and they got Roswell as well and didn't want it and cut it at the first chance...
