The ceremony took place outdoors at a private estate in Montecito, California. The event was designed by celebrity wedding planner Mindy Weiss and the floral arrangements were created by Mark's Garden.

'I wanted to say, 'Let's totally have a rock 'n' roll, goth wedding.' But at the same time I thought, 'I've been dreaming about my wedding day since I was a little girl. I have to wear the white dress.' I wanted to be a princess. People thought that I would have some black wedding dress, and I would have. But at the same time, I was thinking about the wedding pictures, and I wanted to be in style. I didn't want to be thinking 20 years later, 'Oh, why did I wear my hair like that?'

Avril wore a Vera Wang custom-made ivory strapless tissue organza gown with wrapped bodice and appliqué lace beaded skirt. She carried a bouquet of white roses. Whibley and his five groomsmen wore Boss Black tuxes by Hugo Boss. Avril then changed into a second Vera Wang lace dress for the reception.

The newlyweds shared the task of cutting into the four-tiered cake, which was half-chocolate and half-vanilla, reflecting their different tastes.

After the ceremony, the newlyweds privately exchanged vows they had written themselves and then headed for the dinner and reception. The reception was in tent draped with red fabric. There were red roses, red candles, and red lighting to set the mood.
