For every crap character there is a good one. Or maybe it's 3-1

Well, it's more like 1-2-1...for every good character, there are two mediocre chars that are pulled up to a better than average character and one crap character that is pulled up to just below average. I think that's the scifi formula.

Twilight isn't about vampires, it's about teenagers with sharp teeth.
Vampires don't "sparkle" in the sun: they screech in horror, burst into flame and wither to ash.

It's not just sf, there's crap characters in every genre. But often how many crap characters a show has depends on the show's overall attitude. Some shows have an outlook that leads to lots of crap characters and some shows have an outlook that leads to good characters. Also, who plays a part can have a big effect. A good actor can salvage a part and a bad one can ruin a part.

I find that a lot of characters I dislike a lot, I'm not keen on the actors either. And with characters I'm very fond of, I often like the actors too. An actor can't help but bring a lot of themselves into a part, their own deeper nature is all they REALLY have to work with.

If the acting's bad it makes it hard to like the character. A lot of the time though it's shoddy writing, I don't think it matters how good an actor you are if the writing's crap.

I disagree. There's a lot a good actor can do with even bad material. Within limits, at least.

And with actors who mess up characters, it's not just bad acting that can be a problem, there's also actors who tend to bring an unnecessarily negative feel to characters who aren't meant to be that way, maximizing the character's bad points and minimizing the good points, etc.

You sure seem to be dodging the question, Sum1.

Are you having trouble finding them?

Actually, I thought somebody else was answering the question. And I'm not really into answering the question, because people will have very different views on both the writing quality and the acting quality and I amn't interested in getting into a complex debate. What counts as examples for me will quite likely not count as examples for some other people and I'm not interested in getting sidetracked into debating all that.

Now, getting back on topic, female sf characters: Boomer's great, Grace Park does a real good job with her, but I wish they'd left her as a human and not made her a bloody Nylon (whoops, Cylon).

You have to have an inside person for the plot to thicken with.

Yeah, it makes the plot plenty thick.
