Since I opened one for the guys I thought the girls should get a thread too.

Again, I thought we should have an discussion/appreciation thread for all the female SF characters and actresses.

Where would the Star Trek TNG be without Councellor Troy? Hmmm...

I have to say, hands down, I have yet to see on a network television show (minus-cable) where a woman kicks a** as well as Jessica Alba's character Max on Dark Angel.

I just hate how that character was pretty much squandered away in Season Two

I loved how inspite of being this hi-tech-genome project gone out of hand, she had a vulnerbility to her. Favorite episode is, in Season One, called Flush.

My favorites:

Scully (X-Files)- Intelligent, loyal, determined...how far would Mulder have gotten without her by his side?

Max (Dark Angel) - I loved her in season one. I loved her attitude, loved how she didn't want no part of being a hero, she was just trying to survive in the world. I could identify with her cynical personality. I hated what they did to her in season two, and I blame most of it on the Logan Cale character.

What I love about sci-fi women is that they are so smart. All of the sci-fi shows that I have ever watched have had powerful, intelligent women. To name a few of my favorite:

Carter (Stargate SG-1)
Scully (X-Files)
Jadzia Dax (DS9)

There are others that I like, but these really are the ones that I love the most.

An increasing number of genres actually. Heck, one of the most superbly ass-kicking female characters ever on TV was Nikita of La Femme Nikita. And that's a spy show, not sf.

A lot better? TNG was hardly a mine of good female characters -one of its greatest weaknesses. But there were great female characters on some of the other Trek shows, like Kira Nerys and Jadzia Dax (Ds9) and Hoshi Sato (Enterprise).

Can't say I agree. I like Alba and I like Max and I like the show, but I don't think Alba really makes Max convincing as a super-warrior type. Super-thief type, yeah definitely, but not the super-soldier thing.

Aeryn anyway. Always had mixed feelings about Chiana. Kinda figure she does too, actually. Interesting character, anyway.

I've always preferred Monica Reyes. Both stronger and more human than Scully. Gish is a very good actress and I think Reyes deserves more appreciation. I wish she'd been teamed with Mulder back in 93 and from then on, instead of Scully.

I only wish I could agree. My feeling is that tv and cinema (of all genres) still has trouble portraying female characters properly and that there are a lot less good female characters than there should be. Bad female characterization really p1sses me off.

Are you really not aware who they are or are you just trying to provoke a Willow-Buffy gush? Buffy is of course thoroughly cool. As for Willow, I'll politely refrain from commenting.

Hmmm... some other female characters of note....

Nyssa (Leonor Varela's Blade 2 character), Jill Valentine and Alice (Resident Evil movies), Liz Parker (Roswell), Buffy and Dawn and Tara and Drusilla (BTVS -already mentioned Buffy before actually, but she deserves double mention), Kate Lockley (Elizabeth Rohm's character on Angel), Alia Atriedes (Children of Dune mini-series), Prue Halliwell (the only good thing about Charmed -I don't care what Shannon Doherty acts like offscreen, she's a good actress), Selene (Underworld), Georgia Lass (Dead Like Me), Jaye Tyler (Wonderfalls), Susan Ivanova and Delenn (Babylon 5), Dureena Nafeel (from Crusade, even if the show sucked megatons) and Kara Starbuck Thrace (from the new Battlestar Galactica -Katee Sackhoff does a great job despite the show lacking something).

Speaking of Charmed, my favourite character has always been Piper, Holly's an amazing actress. I like Phoebe and Paige sometimes but other times they really get on my nerves.

And Georgia from DLM is a great character, shame the show got axed

Personally I don't have much time for any of those 3, but each to their own. Getting rid of Doherty was monumentally dumb.

Axing that show was one of the stupidest things ever. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen. And Georgia and Rube were great interacting in it (and Patinkin was brilliant as Rube).

What I loved about the show was that apart from the reaper thing, the characters were so real, it was refreshing to see that on t.v. Even someone like Daisy who I found really irritating at first, was a three dimensional character by the end of the show.

I couldn't stand Hoshi at the start, she was scared of her own shadow and even complained about her quarters being on the wrong side of the ship because the 'stars were going the wrong way'.

She's one character we've really seen mature and develop over the series. I quite like her now.

Hoshi at the start was somebody who was very much not a fieldwork person and had been pressured into a very challenging and dangerous field assignment by Archer. She was scared out of her wits, yeah, but she had no problem admitting that and she worked hard on doing something about it. She was probably the most humanly vulnerable trek character ever and she was somebody who made an effort despite her crippling fears. That made her a very real character. And to my mind a very meaningful one.
