my all time favourite author of fantasy stories is enid blyton.....
her stories take to a different world of inanimate things and species other than humans................ most of her stories are all soft and rosy and beautiful.......

and another favourite author of this genre is c.s lewis.......the author who has written the enchanting series of chronicles of narnia................

his books in this narnia series have some happy as well as dark moments........

although his books are now made into motion pictures......the first movie the lion, the witch and the wadrobe was a success.............the second movie prince caspian is releasing this may on the 16th..

but enid blytons's books except noddy are retained as books................

Aside from your major authors, my favourite is C.S. Friedman.

If you're really into SciFi/Fantasy books, you should join us on the book thread.

There are so many good ones it's hard to pick. I like:

George R. R. Martin's 'A Song of Ice and Fire' series (when is he going to finish it?)

Robin Hobb's 'The Farseer Trilogy'

Juliet Marillier's 'The Sevenwaters Trilogy'

I never read any of his. I sort of have a policy not to read a series until all the books are finished.

Of course I didn't follow this policy with George R R. I read the 'Game of Thrones' and loved it. Read the next 'A Clash of Kings' but although I have the next 2 I'm holding off reading them until the series is finished. Supposedly there was going to be 6 total but not sure now. Even if there will only be 6, I want him to go back and finish. The next, 'Dance of Dragons', supposedly will be out this fall.

G R R Martin used to write TV scripts, one show was 'Beauty and the Beast'. I love his style of writing. Great dialog and action and not overly long description. Also his characters are multi-facetted. "Good guys" do stupid or evil things and "bad guys" do good things. He's also not afraid to kill or maim main characters so the story is not predictable. Like I said about BSG he's not for the faint of heart.

In this case, you might have to break your rule. Wheel of time is a fabulous series, but will never be finished (at least not by Robert Jordan).

The Amber series is nice too.

I had borrowed the first book from someone at work but couldn't get into it.

I read the first 5 ( or was it 6) in the Amber series. My son's name is Corwin .

Heh, he's really long winded, but after a few books, you get used to it. I think theres' 20+ books in all.

Yes and no. As I understand it Robert Jordan, knowing he was running out of time, did leave quite detailed notes for concluding the series. So it's going to be written by someone else (Brandon Sanderson I believe), but it is going to finish the way Jordan intended.

I'm actually curious if this may provide a more focused book than the last few. I suspect that Sanderson will have to answer to the editors much more than Jordan had to. I'm not familiar with Sanderson's work though.

Having butted into the conversation, I should answer the original question. If we're talking about all time favorites, it's going to have to be Tolkien. The Hobbit got me into fantasy books and I still re-read The Lord of the Rings.

If I was going for current writers, I think I'd pick George R. R Martin. I'be been really taken by his Song of Ice and Fire sequence.

The first 6 or so books in The Wheel of Time are really good, but I don't care for the last few.

As for my favorite... such a hard question. CS Lewis, JRR Tolkien, George RR Martin... hmm.

Hiya AE...how's it been going?

I heard that Sanderson is doing it as well, but I look upon someone else finishing the stories the same way I look on all the Dune Books....I know they have their fans, but I'm not one of them. I doubt he'll have the same style that Jordan did....it won't be the same feel.
