We agreed about Underworld and Near Dark being good.

Yes, but I can still count those on one hand!

What is your opinion on some of the not so overtly popular vampire movies, such as "The Forsaken", "30 Days of Night", "John Carpenter's Vampires" etc,?

Brendan Fehr is a good actor, but the guy from Dawson's Creek is bland. The Forsaken wasn't a great movie. Just standard vampires-must-be-killed stuff.

John Carpenter's Vampires was a low down kind of movie and another by-the-numbers vampires-must-be-killed thing. James Woods is a good actor but the film wasn't impressive in the slightest.

I haven't seen 30 Days of Night yet.

Well, I like Ryan Reynolds and Johnny Depp.

Rewatched Dracula 2000. Gerard Butler was really good as Dracula. The film wasn't brilliant, but it works and Butler's performance shines. Jennifer Esposito makes a very sexy vampire. The direct-to-vid sequels without Butler are crap and should be ignored. Actually, Butler is a candidate for best Dracula ever. Best Draculas: Butler, Oldman, Jourdan, Lugosi, in no particular order. Christopher Lee's performances don't make the grade, lacking depth.

I have to admit I haven't seen Dracula 2000 but I do like Gerard Butler. So maybe that's a sign

If you like Butler you should see it. It's one of his best performances.

Myles is good. There are worse things than the show, but it was still kind of an overly gentle take on vampires. Try True Blood.

True Blood...

Hurry up with that series, ok?

The first Underworld was more than a mere action flick.
I'm watching - and loving - True Blood. One more S2 ep to watch, then wait for S3 to get to me (I don't have HBO).

I agree that Moonlight's take is more gentle than I'd do myself - good way to put it - but I think it's a logical take on things, and I enjoy the variety. It'd be no fun if everyone's vision was the same.

Ouch. I started an Eric unappreciation thread on the True Blood board and I've written a bunch of parodies about him. His ego needs to be reduced severely. He's better in season 2, but he still needs to be taken down a peg. And he's a viking and the vikings did a lot of nasty stuff, particularly to my country. Arrogant big brute of a vampire who thinks he's The Big Man... reminds me of Angel. Pam isn't to my liking either. I was annoyed with Jessica originally but I liked her in season 2, until she started feeding on people, that is. Sophie-Anne? That's the queen, right? She's relatively good, but I think Michelle Trachtenberg would have been more fun in the role.

My favorites... Tara WAS my favorite until they ruined her in season 2. Amy is cool, even if she's only in it for 6 eps and dies. I like Bill. He has some stupid attitudes, but Moyer plays him really well. Sam is likable. Both Bill and Sam are less pleasant in the inferior books. Most things are less good in the books, like Harris keeps saying vampires don't do this or don't feel that, like as if she's trying to make them as unrelatable as possible. The show doesn't do that and goes out of its way to show the humanity of vampires. Harris's attitude is basically fangist. Sookie gets annoying in the books too -it's like she thinks she's so special. I really liked Eddie, the gay vampire Amy staked. I find Jason likable despite him being a brainless arsehole. He's fun. The actor plays him really well. Andy is developing well. Godric was good -a vampire who actually respected humans, but his suicide was wrong-headed. If he'd stayed alive he could have helped vampire-human relations.

Eric parodies:

The Queen’s Judgement:

Eric: Sookie is MINE!
Bill: No fair!
Sookie: I don't belong to anybody!
Vampire Queen: How about if I chop her in half and you both get half?
Eric: Yeah, that'd be ok with me.
Bill: No, don't chop her in half!
Sookie: Nobody's going to chop me in half!
Tara: Y'all are so stupid!
Eric: I'm bored. I think I'll go pillage a village.

Eric in the Bath:

::Bill comes home and hears music in his house, comes upstairs to find the door to his bathroom open and Eric's in the bath, with music playing on his radio::
Eric: It sounds better if you understand Old Swedish.
Bill: Wtf are you doing in my bath?
Eric: No, really, it does. I'm not just kidding you.
Bill: Wtf are you doing in my bath?!
Eric: I was a Viking you know, so I was around when Old Swedish was spoken.
Bill: Dude, wtF are you doing in my bath?!
Eric: I mean, I used to go on these Viking raids and burn people's homes and rape people. And dogs. I was so cool.
Bill: Wtf are you doing in my bath?!!!
Eric: I'm really the coolest dude in town. Have you ever raped a dog?
Bill: Uh, what?!
Eric: Or a cat?
Bill: Get out of my damn bath!!
Eric: You can't give me orders. I'm your superior. I'm soooo superior. And Sookie belongs to me.
Bill: That's it! ::grabs a stake and stakes Eric::
Bill: Oh crap, now my bathroom's a mess.

Down the Toilet:

Eric: The books say I marry Sookie, so that’s it –she’s MINE!
Tara: No she’s not! Sookie is her own damn person!
Jason: Books? There’s books? Does that mean I have to read? I can’t read!
Sam: Woof! ::snarls at Eric::
Bill: We had books back in my day.
Tara: And slaves!
Eric: When I went a-Viking, we used to take slaves!
Tara: You too, huh? Why am I not surprised? You think you own Sookie.
Eric: I DO own Sookie. Charlaine Harris wrote that I marry her, so-
::Tara kicks him in the balls::
Eric: Ow!
Tara: Bill, let’s grab him!
Bill: I’m with you.
::Bill and Tara grab Eric::
Eric: Hey! What’s this? You can’t grab me! I’m the boss!
Jason: Can I join in?
Sam: Woof! ::bites Eric::
::They all drag Eric into the bathroom::
Eric: Hey, what are you doing?
Tara: Shove him into the toilet!
::They shove Eric headfirst down the toilet::
::Eric’s garbled cries from inside the toilet::
Jason: But what if I want to use the toilet?
Tara: Go do it outside, like Sam.
Sam: Woof!
::Eric sings in Old Swedish from inside the toilet bowl::
::Bill kicks Eric in the balls::
Eric: Ow!
Bill: Sookie is NOT yours.
Eric: But Charlaine Harris SAID-
Tara: Tough!
Eric: Waaaaaaaaaa!

Favorite means most interesting. Eric may not be the nicest person either as a vampire or as a viking warrior, but he's interesting. He's manipulative and ruthless and now and then shows a redeeming sense, for example, of loyalty.

Sophie-Anne isn't the greatest humanitarian either, unless you mean her diet, but she rocks.

I'd love to see Michelle Trachtenberg play a vampire queen!

I also agree on Jason. He is a lot of fun.

Godric was very philosophical, and weary. Amazing portrayal really. But remember he wasn't the nicest guy for 1900 years or so, before he managed to grow up.

I find Bill more interesting. There's much more intensity in Moyer's performance than in Skarsgaard's

Wouldn't that be great?

Well, we don't know exactly when he matured, only that he was pretty sinister about 1000 years ago. But it was really annoying that we meet an important powerful vampire who respects humans and he just goes and suicides himself.
