I hadn't read any vampire books until the last couple of weeks. I started the Charlain Harris 'Southern Vampire Mysteries' series. I've read the first 2 -- 'Dead Until Dark' and 'Living Dead in Dallas'. Both are fun reads. Has any one else read this series and if so do the other books measure up?

I've read the two books you have, Kathy. I've also read at least one short story - can't remember which anthology at the moment. I thought I had purchased the third book but it turned out I had two copies of the first one. Haven't fixed that error yet, except to sell the extra copy.

Completely agree AmyScott.

Southern Vampire Mysteries, that's the series that True Blood is going to be based on, correct?

Twilight isn't about vampires, it's about teenagers with sharp teeth.
Vampires don't "sparkle" in the sun: they screech in horror, burst into flame and wither to ash.

Oh, thanks. I had no idea. I saw mention of True Blood before but paid little attention. I had ordered these first 2 SVM books several months ago but just got around to reading them.

Can't decide if the upcoming True Blood is enough reason to subscrube to HBO though.

I'm not sure if it is either. I saw the pilot, it was ok, but for 25 bucks a month...not sure about that.

I'll probably won't subscribe. Instead I'll wait to see if it is any good and then get the dvds.

That might be a wise course...especially since 2 months of subscription service is the same cost as the DVD's.

I quite like those books and the ones following, but I thought the last two books (6 & 7?) were weak.

Thanks.

I went ahead and got all the way through the seventh book. I'm readling 'Dead a a Doornail' (book 5) now. I like them all so far. I think I'll wait until No 8 comes out in paperback before getting it.

I could see this being a fun TV show.

I watched "Queen Of The Damned" last night, Anne Rice's novel 'turned' movie.

It was okay, but the story of Akasha was cool. It's sort of depressing though because Aaliyah played Akasha, and she died the year the film was released.

I even heard that she died before they could finish filming all her scenes.

She was awesome as the ancient vampire Akasha though, sad to know we won't see her in anything else.

It was an OK movie, the novel was much better, even for a Anne Rice novel. I still don't get how Claudia Black played Pandora...but it's ok. Still a shame that she died.

Books are always better than the movie.

But I think a lot was cut out because of Aaliyah's death.

They could have turned to George Lucas....he could have created a huge digital version of her.

^^ Probably.. I wonder if she hadn't died during final filming stages, what else there would have been to the movie.

I wouldn't think much. I believe that 90% of the film was completed by the time she died.
