Torchwood Appreciation #1: Captain Jack's back and he's wearing black!

Torchwood is a spin off television series from Doctor Who. Torchwood was the name that the BBC put on the original New Doctor Who master tapes as they were couriered to the mixing studios so as to try to avoid them leaking onto the internet prematurely, Torchwood was Doctor Who's pseudonymn. Torchwood is an anagram of the words Doctor-Who. It stars Captain Jack Harkness which fans of the new Doctor Who will remember as the lovable bi-sexual American hero from season 27 of Doctor Who.

I noticed that this series has a LOT of similarities to the Buffy spin-off Angel. Firstly is the fact Torchwood is a spin off just as Angel was. Angel was a much darker programme than Buffy was, as is Torchwood. The intro scenes of Torchwood flying over the city in sped-up motion and slow-motion was very-much how Angel was directed. The 2nd episode of season 1 of Angel it had a demon that needed to have sex with humans to survive, but in doing so it killed them. That is the same sort of story in the 2nd episode of Torchwood season one, but it is an alien instead of a demon.

Has anyone here watched the first two episodes of Torchwood yet? Rachel perhaps? ;) I liked the references that Jack put in at the end of the first episode, I was wondering how he got back from the space station after being brought back from the dead by Rose. Nice consequences there! Love how he referenced the doctor in a subtle way by not even saying THE doctor but he did say he was looking for a GOOD doctor. :D

I really enjoyed John Barrowman's performance and the writing was quite sharp but I didn't really warm to the new characters too much. I think I just need to see more.

I didn't notice the similarities with Angel but now you mention it, there do seem to be some links between the two. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out - I think Angel surpassed Buffy in a lot of ways, maybe this will be the same.

Did you also notice that Gwen is played by the actress that acted as Gwyneth in the Doctor Who episode 'The Unquiet Dead'? I wonder if that is just a coincidence? Someone who looks the same and has a very similar name and is in the same location (Cardiff) but existed in different times...perhaps there is a real link that will be revealed as the show progresses?

Oh yeah! Another Angel similarity is the font that the word 'Torchwood' uses during the intro scene of the episodes is extremely similar to the font used for 'Angel'. Another thing I noticed was that the hot asian woman who is a team member of Torchwood was the doctor in the episode of Doctor Who where the Slitheen arrived on Earth. The episode was episode 4 of season 27 called 'Aliens of London'. She was chased down the halls of the hospital by a genetically altered pig that flew and crashed the slitheen ship through Big Ben...perhaps that was what sparked her interest in things supernatural and alien?

Hi

New to Dr Who (old&New) & Torchwood of course  I watched Torchwood without watching a single episode of Dr. Who. Therefore I didn't notice the connections/hints mentioned above. But I really enjoyed it & I am looking forward to the next episode :)

Hi  ;)

Thoughts on the last episode? Anyone? :look:

I liked it. I was glad they were not actually ghosts. I am looking forward to a flashback where we see Jack being pregnant! Also I wish to see how that hot asian female Doctor found Torchwood. I know why, it was that incident with the genetically altered pig in her hospital - couldn't possibly be anything else. :)

I've been so out of it lately, I didn't even realize Torchwood had started yet! I desperately need to catch up.

It's like the Bernice Summerfield books/audio Doctor Who spinoff - she'll make oblique references to the Doctor, but doesn't usually mention him by name.

Well Captain Jack is now immortal thanks to Rose from back when she brought him back from the dead in the final scenes of the final episode of the Eccelston era of Doctor Who. Jack was explaining to Gwen the nOOb why he did not die when he was recently shot in the head in the first episode of Torchwood. She asked him 'Can anyone help you?' I think she was asking about helping him return to being mortal again. To which he replied 'I am looking for a good doctor to help me.' Or something similar to that.

 That is yet ANOTHER similarity to Angel! Angel was an immortal vampire, Jack is an immortal bisexual. ;) hehe

I wonder whose hand that was the Jack tried to save after the girl threw it and the glass jar it was inside of onto the ground. His response while holding the moving hand was as if it were a good friend or love of his life was dying...
