Stargate Atlantis

Only a couple of episodes have aired so far, but I'm already hooked on this SG-1 spinoff

Any other fans out there?

Yes, there are fans out there. The SG-1 thread seems to have become a combined SG1/SGA thread.

Only slightly off-topic: Did anyone hear about the Swedish scientist who thinks Ireland is Atlantis?
Quote:
"Just like Atlantis, Ireland is 300 miles long, 200 miles wide, and widest across the middle. They both have a central plain surrounded by mountains.
"I've looked at geographical data from the rest of the world and of the 50 largest islands there is only one that has a plain in the middle -- Ireland."
Erlingsson believes the idea that Atlantis sank came from the fate of Dogger Bank, an isolated shoal in the North Sea, about 60 miles off the northeastern coast of England, which sank after being hit by a huge flood wave around 6,100 B.C.
"I suspect that myth came from Ireland and it derives from Dogger Bank. I think the memory of Dogger Bank was probably preserved in Ireland for around 3,000 years and became mixed up with the story of Atlantis," he said.

I love Atlantis even more so then Sg1. Ever since the beginning of Season 7 it's been hard to get back into the groove in watching it.

Some good news for Atlantis:

Quote:
Its first full week as a 2-show franchise, Stargate sat high atop The SCI FI Channel's ratings stack. The first post-premiere episodes of Stargate Atlantis and Stargate SG-1 aired on July 23, and were the highest-rated programs of the week for the network.

Stargate SG-1's "Lockdown" drew almost 2.7 million viewers, scoring a 2.0 household rating. While this is down four-tenths of a point from the record-setting 2.4 earned by the 2-hour season premiere, it's a solid outing for the series, which averaged a 1.8 rating in Season Seven.

Other than the July 9 premiere, only two previous episodes of the series have hit the 2.0 mark on SCI FI.

Stargate Atlantis followed the strong lead-in performance of its sister show with an even better 2.5 household rating, drawing more than 3.3 million viewers for "Hide and Seek." This is down seven-tenths of a point from the 3.2 set by the heavily-promoted series premiere one week earlier, yet still bests SG-1's all-time record on SCI FI.

It's also the first week in more than two years that Stargate SG-1 has aired a new episode on SCI FI and has not been the top-rated show. (Leave it to Stargate to unseat Stargate.)

The network's next highest-rated program for the week was the movie "Bone Snatcher," which earned a 1.5 household rating.

Ah, that's such a cool thought. The Stargate has 39 symbols, right? Usually the addresses all have 7 symbols that lock, the last of which is the point of origin. The Stargate has 9 chevrons and we know the power needed for dialing 8 is already more than they can handle, though they did do it in a season 2 episode, with the help of the Asgard. Probably would have done it more often if they had a bunch of ZPM's lying around... but that would make for so many different permutations. We assume that most of the symbols are identical, except for the point of origin, so that makes things a little simpler.

Earth's stargate has 9 chevrons. 7 are visible. The bottom 2 are hidden because of the ramp. An 8th symbol address is required for dialing a gate in another galaxy (ie. The Asgard homeworld is in the Ida galaxy and Atlantis in the Pegasus galaxy). Sugi is right about Earth's gate not able to handle that much power by its self so a ZPM is required to generate the extra power that flows to the gate.
