We got a little sprinkle yesterday that might have been caused by Edourd. Could have used more.

In the past 3 days I have visited 3 zoos. My feet are killing me!!!

3 zoos? Seriously? We have 1 zoo here, the next closest one is hours away.

We were going to go to the zoo on Tuesday, but it was too hot for the little one, so we had indoor picnics instead.

Zoo 1: Small zoo a few miles out of town Welcome to the Capital of Texas Zoo
Zoo 2: San Antonio (about 1.25 hours away) San Antonio Zoo and Aquarium - Where you experience Real. Wild. Life.
Zoo 3: near the city limits, mostly for rescued animals Austin Zoo & Animal Sanctuary - Home

eta -
Zoo 4: Waco, about 100 miles away Cameron Park Zoo - Waco, Texas

Tomorrow we may visit a "Safari" in New Braunfels (near San Antonio). At least there won't be as much walking there since it's a drive-through wildlife ranch: Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch I visited something similar in Meridian (closer to Waco) when I was in high school.

Wow, that's a ton of Zoos that are relatively close to you. We have the St. Louis Zoo and Grant's Farm, aside from that we have 1 Tiger park within 2 hours. That's about it.

I've been to both the St. Louis Zoo and Grant's Farm. Have you visited the Butterfly House in Chesterfield: MBG: The Butterfly House - Home It's pretty cool.

How about the Henson Robinson Zoo in Springfield, IL: Henson Robinson Zoo: News According to google maps Springfield is about 2 hours from St. Louis, which is an hour or so closer than the other zoos in Missouri.

Wooo, I forget about Springfield....no one goes there, it's a weird place, much like Camelot.

Butterfly house isn't bad. My girls go there with their grandpa all the time.

The San Antonio Zoo has a small butterfly house. It was okay and I managed to get a large butterfly on my finger and transfer it to my nephew for an awesome picture.

One thing that sort of bugged me was that most of the petting zoos only had goats. What's up with that? Are there no other animals that children can safely pet?

Also, when I was trying to look up the wildlife park I visited back in high school I found a place with the same name and similar location that seems to now be a place to hunt. To be fair, they also host corporate events and weddings, and you can set up a photography tour, but when I was there it was strictly a place to view animals in a free ranging habitat. I even got to ride a camel.

We have a place like that down near Springfield MO, I think you have to take your own care through it though.

St. Louis Zoo has a petting zoo with goats, Guinea Pigs and something else (can't remember right now), it's a pain to get into it, though.

We're enjoying a nice bout of beautiful weather, high of 83 today.

Yes, you drive your own car through the Safari parks. Some of the animals will come right up to your car to get food, which can be scary or cool. I'm not real fond of ostriches, they can be mean, but the rest of the animals are generally well behaved. Mostly various types of deer, antelope, llama, goat (not the same kind as the petting zoo), zebra, etc. Obviously the only birds would be of the flightless variety - ostriches and emus.

Speaking of flightless birds - did everyone see the article and pictures of the King Penguin being knighted? King penguin knighted by Norway - Animal weirdness - MSNBC.com

No, but I'm going to now.

I dislike Ostrichs terribly. They're like giant chickens for me, really. Ugg.

There's a butterfly conservatory in Niagara Falls that I'm going to talk hubby into taking me to someday.

What is the obession with butterflies? Everyone thinks thinks they're so beautiful, just wondering.

Kender, just how far down the coast is it? Minutes or hours?

The obsession with butterflies? I don't know. Maybe because they can fly and the way they fly - fluttering around. Plus they're delicate and people tend to be fascinated with delicate things. Probably a little in awe of the whole transformation from caterpillar to winged insect, too.

It's rained the past few days and while that makes the streets a little dangerous and my dogs smelly, the lawn is very happy!

I'm not really sure how far down the coast it is, maybe two or three hours drive.
