| Miss Cranky-Pants, I also cried reading The Last Herald Mage books. I'm glad you'll be able to get all of the books soon then. Do you plan to read the rest of Mercedes Lackey's Velgarth (or Valdemar) series? [ 07-08-2003: Message edited Soz ] | |||

| I actually really like The Mage Storms trilogy by Lackey. I also really like the Heralds of Valdemar trilogy. I couldn't finish the first book in the Griffon's trilogy (The Mage Wars trilogy?). That's really the only trilogy that I haven't finished reading by her. I also really liked By the Sword. Another Lackey book I cried in was Brightly Burning. But I agree with Soz, her later Velgarth books have been for the most part...okay. | |||

| I thought The Mage Winds were okay, but the first book was way too long for what happened in it and there were too many long, overly-descriptive passages (which I guess is a Larry Dixon trademark). I liked By the Sword a lot, but I found Brightly Burning to be pretty pointless since I thought we already knew pretty much everything we needed to know about Lavan from his mention in one of the Arrows books. I still would like to read the book about Skif and the two Alberich books though (the second one comes out this fall). | |||

| Yeah, The Mage Winds isn't my favorite trilogy. The last book is the best of the three with the second being filler, IMO. Skif's story was okay, but I really didn't like Camry. As I read more and more books in the series, I'm getting increasingly annoyed with the Companions. I finally started Sir Apropos of Nothing. I don't know if I like the narrator yet. We'll see. | |||

Really? I haven't noticed an annoyance with the Companions yet, but maybe it's due to not reading the books so much lately. I'll be reading Take a Thief soon because I got it from the library, so I'll see if Camry bothers me too. [ 07-12-2003: Message edited Soz ] | |||

| Soz, their arrogance annoys me. But I've been constantly reading the books so I've had time for it to built up in me. LOL I like Rolin because he can't talk. I finished Stolen by Armstrong last night. I liked it. I like Elena better in this one. I didn't like Clay at all and I hate their relationship. But I really, really like the other characters. I hope we see more of them in the next book, especially Paige, Cassandra, and Savannah. | |||

| I'm almost finished with "Children of the Mind"... it's really different from the other Ender books b/c it's a departure from the Ender-centric storytelling. I really got to like Jane now after the first books. but this is the only book to have me think about spirituality and question whether there is some truth to it... Of course not all of the "Outside" part, but it's interesting on how the "souls" get passed from one life to another. | |||

| See!!! I told ya the book was good... just get rid of Leo though http://scifi.com Hyperion Films In Works? The Ain't It Cool News Web site reported a rumor that Dan Simmons' Hyperion cycle of SF novels may be in development as a feature film. The site based its report on an anonymous poster who said he heard it from Simmons, who spoke at the University Bookstore in Seattle. The site reported that Simmons said that film rights to the Hyperion saga have been sold to "a major studio" and that a "major star and major director" are in talks to shoot a trilogy of movies based on the books. Simmons reportedly added that nothing is definite. Ain't It Cool News also reported that Simmons offered hints as to who may be pushing the film, and the site wondered if the director might be Martin Scorsese and the star might be Leonardo DiCaprio. The Hyperion books are set on the eve of Armageddon, with the entire galaxy at war, and center on seven pilgrims who set forth on a voyage to Hyperion to find answers to the unsolved riddles of their lives, according to a description on Amazon.com. | |||

| Simmons should have learned from Larry Niven not to comment about this before it was actually announced to the public by the movie studio. I was at a convention where Niven was Guest of Honor and said James Cameron had contacted his agent about making a Ringworld movie. Ain't it Cool News (which SciFi then picked up on, without finding out any of the facts) was quick to say it was just a rumor and that Niven himself denied any truth to it, and would not accept any messages to the contrary. I was finally able to find out what happened from Niven's website. Apparently, because he spilled the story too early, the movie studio dropped out of the deal. | |||

| It's that time of the year again... I need some recommendations for books when I reorder in September. I'm getting the following for sure: 1. Dune: The Butlerian Jihad by Brian Herbert 2. Shadow Puppets by Orson Scott Card. Any SciFi or any other non-fantasy books that I should try out? I've read the first book in the Homecoming series, Memory of Earth.. does anyone recommend reading the rest?? What do you think of the following books?
