As I was reading it I thought it was better than Daughter... but not as good as the other two books in the trilogy. But as soon as I finished it, I reread Daughter... again and decided that all the books are great.

And I agree with you on the coming of age stories. That's why I love Summers at Castle Auburn and The Hero and the Crown.

I'm just starting on Goblet of Fire again today in anticipation of getting my grubby mits on Order of the Phoenix at the weekend.

I read The Wee Free Men by Pratchett, some of the dialogue is written in a broad Scottish accent and I don't know how on earth they will manage to translate it into other languages. It's very good but I see many similarities between this and his Lords and Ladies.

Me too. The Tamora Pierce book I mentioned is another coming of age fantasy story and I'm really enjoying it. I'm almost done and I'm thinking of starting the second book in the series next.

Miss Cranky-Pants, I'll have to look up that Prachett book. I've been hankering for some Prachett actually.

Soz, I'll look for that TP book at the library. I try to avoid the AY section at the library because I don't understand how it's orgainized. There's a AY and an adolescent and another 'teen' section. I don't exactly understand the difference in them. I can't find the Harry Potter books there at all. I guess I should ask for assistance but I feel like I should be able to figure it out. LOL

I've had that problem too and I felt stupid because I used to work at a library. I finally had to ask where the book I wanted was shelved and it turns out that it had been stolen. I don't understand the difference between adolescent books and YA either; I always thought they meant the same thing. I guess YA was recently re-named teen though. Anyway, I highly recommend Pierce's books. I finished Alanna: The First Adventure last night and I'm going to be starting the second Alanna book in a few minutes.

I love Summers at Castle Auburn, The Hero and the Crown, and of course the Harry Potter series, but I just couldn't get into the Alanna series when I tried reading it. Maybe it was just the wrong time.

I've had that problem with other books before too. I think you might like the Alanna books if you try them again sometime when you're more in the mood for them. The first book reminded me a bit of McKinley's Damar books and McCaffrey's Dragonsinger.

Here's the cover of Robin McKinley's new book, Sunshine:

Looks decidedly eerie, doesn't it?

And here's the description of the book:

Quote:
They took her clothes and sneakers. They dressed her in a long red gown. And they shackled her to the wall of an abandoned mansion-within easy reach of a figure stirring in the moonlight.

She knows that it is a vampire.

She knows that she's to be his dinner, and that when he is finished with her, she will be dead. Yet, when light breaks, she finds that he has not attempted to harm her. And now it is he who needs her to help him survive the day...
I'm excited to see how McKinley tackles vampires.

Rachel, that sounds interesting. Where did you get the info? Did you know the second Elementals book will be released in the same month as Sunshine?

I ordered Clive Barker's Abarat last week and received it yesterday, so I dropped everything else to read it. Barker is my favorite author and I love his YA book The Thief of Always, so I'm hoping Abarat is as good or better. I wish I knew when the second book in the Abarat Quartet is due to come out.

Rachel, thanks for the info on Sunshine. It looks interesting.

I finished Circus of the Damned. Anita annoyed me in this book. And Richard was blah. I thought I'd like him more than I actually did simply because I think I'd like him more if he wasn't such a prude (later books) but it didn't happen.

I haven't gotten my email about it, yet!

I have, however, received my copy of Swell Foop, by Piers Anthony, so I have something to read while waiting for Harry Potter to get here!

I got the info from Amazon. Yes, I did know that, but I'm not too excited about the Anthology -- didn't enjoy the first one very much.

I called my local Barnes and Noble today. They've definitely got my copy, so tonight I'll be heading down there! I'll have to get there really early to get a parking spot. This means I'll have to sit through the little party, which starts at 10 and seems to be geared to little kids (balloon animals, face painting, etc). But I'll bring Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban along, which I'm reading at the moment. And hopefully they'll have food!
