Lois McMaster Bujold?

Twilight isn't about vampires, it's about teenagers with sharp teeth.
Vampires don't "sparkle" in the sun: they screech in horror, burst into flame and wither to ash.

She has won more Hugos than Heinlein. She has three series, two of which are excellent and the other one is just starting (the first book came out on Tuesday). Her Vorkosigan series is one of my favorite SF series and it is highly regarded. Her Chalion series is also awesome. The Bujold Nexus - The Lois McMaster Bujold Homepage Her site has some links to sample chapters and a free novella.

The Vorkosigan series is military space opera with quite a bit of humor, commentary on disability, and there is a romantic sub-plot in some of the books. It isn't high tech SF really, but there is some exploration of how technology affects people.

The Chalion series is fantasy with a neat religious system. And again, there are some disabled characters and a bit of romance.

The Sharing Knife series is also fantasy and I've heard that it's more romantic than most of her other stuff and once again, she has a "flawed" hero (from the cover of the second book, which comes out next summer, I gather that the hero only has one hand).

She also has a stand-alone fantasy book called The Spirit Ring, which I don't think is as good as her more mature works, but I liked that it was set in Renaissance Italy.

Is it kind of like Starship Troopers then, the Vorkosigan series?

I think there are a few similarities, but the Vorkosigan series doesn't really remind me much of Starship Troopers. Miles Vorkosigan is a character who is born disabled because of a terrorist attack on his pregnant mother. His bones are brittle and he's very small, but he's obsessed with being in the military, so when he gets rejected by the military, he starts his own mercenary fleet instead. The books follow Miles through his life stages and they deal with his culture and the cultures of a few other planets too. Some of the books are more action and war oriented and one book is actually based on Regency romances and Jane Austen books.

Hrm, sounds intriguing...so he's a fleet for hire, more or less?

I've kind of given up on the books that I was stalling with. So I've started The Blue Girl by Charles de Lint. I really, really like it so far. Interesting characters and I like de Lint's style in this book.

Hey stinky, I'm halfway (400 of 800) through Ilium by Dan Simmons. I am somewhat confused about how I feel about it. I do not know the direction the author is going to combine all of the storylines because they are all disjointed. I am more drawn to the Trojan war aspects and .... how the perverted scholar morphs into Paris so he bed Helen of Troy.

Hopefully the other storylines pickup so it gets more interesting.

Isn't this liek the last Dune book ever, there are no more notes for Brian Herbert to leech off of?

No. Next August will be the final one from Frank Herbert's notes.

I read rumors that they will continue the Paul Atreides saga when he's still in Caladan prior to the beginning of Dune.

The Blue Girl is a YA book and it's about a teen who has to battle this soul stealing monster. It's a really bad summary. There's so much more to it.

yoss, I'm thinking of trying to read the Dune prequels again. Which one should I start with? I know I remember reading one but I can't remember which one it was. I should try to find it. Illium will definitely have to wait to be read. I've got too many books on my to-read list right now, unless you say that the book is awesome and it is a must read. LOL

Right now I'm reading a fairy tale anthology that takes a more adult and harsher twist with classic fairy tales. The stories are really good and I really like the authors listed. I'm also reading a couple of other books but nothing else is really grabbing me except Jpod which is about a group of game developers in Canada. It's so whacky and true.

So Brian Herbert is going to continue on, then?

Sounds somewhat interesting Onion, is it a coming of age story or something?
