Hyperion Films In Works?

The Ain't It Cool News Web site reported a rumor that Dan Simmons' Hyperion cycle of SF novels may be in development as a feature film. The site based its report on an anonymous poster who said he heard it from Simmons, who spoke at the University Bookstore in Seattle.

The site reported that Simmons said that film rights to the Hyperion saga have been sold to "a major studio" and that a "major star and major director" are in talks to shoot a trilogy of movies based on the books. Simmons reportedly added that nothing is definite.

Ain't It Cool News also reported that Simmons offered hints as to who may be pushing the film, and the site wondered if the director might be Martin Scorsese and the star might be Leonardo DiCaprio.

The Hyperion books are set on the eve of Armageddon, with the entire galaxy at war, and center on seven pilgrims who set forth on a voyage to Hyperion to find answers to the unsolved riddles of their lives, according to a description on Amazon.com.</STRONG>
The Hyperion books were fun, and might make a good movie.

I wasn't as big a fan of the sequels (the Endymion books).

Well Hyperion and Fall of Hyperion was really one big book , and I really liked how it all came together at the end... The best thing about the books I thought was that The Shrike never said a word and still made his presence felt. I thought Endymion was good, but it wasn't as interesting as Hyperion ... mostly b/c it stuck to one POV instead of throwing the reading into a different tale where you had to get reorient yourself w/ the new characters. Brawne Lamia had the best, most interesting storyline IMO.

I've been having a rest from sci-fi/fantasy books, but I'm back on the wagon now though. Just starting the second book in The Wheel of Time series.

I am going to start The Pillars of the World by Anne Bishop tonight. I had some library books I wanted to finish first, but I'm so excited about finally being able to read this series that I just can't wait anymore.

I think I've read more sci-fi/fantasy books this summer than I have in a long time. For fantasy, I've read all five Harry Potter books (I got tired of being the only person in the world who hadn't read any of them yet), the five Harry Dresden books by Jim Butcher (Storm Front, Fool Moon, Grave Peril, Summer Knight and Death Masks), and I'm currently half way through The Return of the King (in preparation for the final LotR movie). On the sci-fi front, I'm about 2/3rds of the way through Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson. That one's taking me forever, it's not exactly casual reading at about 900 pages.

Timeo, that's cool. By the time my college got around to offering a fantasy/SF class, I had already graduated.

Well, it looks like I have to wait a bit longer after all to read the Anne Bishop series. The new Lois McMaster Bujold book was in at the library, so I'm reading that now. I went to a Bujold signing Monday and she read an excerpt from her next book in this series, and I already can't wait to read that one.

I finished Paladin of Souls by Lois McMAster Bujold and it was amazing! I love her fantasy as much as I love her SF Vorkosigan series.

Now I'm reading Skyfall by Catherine Asaro. This is the ninth book in her Skolian series and I can't enough of them!

I hope to get back to the Anne Bishop series after I read Skyfall, but I have Sunshine by Robin McKinley on reserve at the library, so I might get that soon.

Is there anyone on here who's a fan of Charles De Lint? I started reading him my senior year in college and read anything of his that I can get my hands on. My favorite books are Memory and Dream, The Onion Girl and Someplace To Be Flying. I like how the books aren't in any chronological order, but what happened to one character in another book is mentioned in passing in the book you're reading at the time. It's just all so connected. Anyway, I love his use of both Celtic and Native American myth and his character development. Anyone else?

Gaelicmaiden, I haven't read De Lint yet, but I have The Little Country. Have you read that one? I do most of my book shopping at a used bookstore and I hardly ever see his books there, but the library has most of them, so if I like The Little Country when I get around to reading it, I'll be able to read the rest of his books.

I finished Skyfall last night and it was very good. At first, I was disappointed that it's a prequel because I think Asaro might be headed toward never-ending-series mode with her Skolian Saga, but there was enough plot that hadn't been revealed in the later books and the characters were engaging. Even if this is a never-ending series, it hasn't become boring, repetitive, or predictable, which is the main thing I hate about most series with more than 10 or so books.

Hi
I just started re reading the nineth book in The Wheel of Time series so I can go out and buy the tenth book next week. Also I would like to say I really enjoyed the Cold Fire Trilogy by C.S.Friedman.

No one has posted about books since November 2003?! Does that mean none of us read SciFri/Fantasy books or that we talk about them only on the Books board?
I've actually been on a bit of a mystery book kick lately, although one two-book mystery series I've recently read involves vampires. I've talked about it on the Vampire thread so I won't go into it here.
I'm also stuck in the middle of book seven of the Wheel of Time series. Still need to get back to that. Will probably have to start the book over again from the beginning.
Currently, I'm just over a third of the way through a really old book, Master of Life and Death by Robert Silverberg. Its original copyright date is 1957. It's an interesting look at possible solutions, and their ramifications, to Earth's overpopulation in the year 2232. Sometimes Silverberg's books are too weird for me, but this one has my (almost) undivided attention. Speaking of which, I should read another chapter and then get some sleep.

I just heard that margaret weis is going to do another trilogy of the dragonlance War of Souls dealing with Mina. I'm a freak for Dragonlance/Starwars Books, and anything by CS Friedman.

I was a major Dragonlance series fan when I was a kid. After the dozenth trilogy revolving around essentially the same characters, I got a little bored with it all. But the first two trilogies were awesome.

I read a bunch of Star Wars books, but The Phantom Menace/Clone Wars turned me off the original Star Wars universe. Other than games - LucasArts makes some fantastic SW games. I'm in the middle of Knights of the Old Republic at the moment.

The last SF/F-ish book I read was the latest book in the Harry Dresden series, "Blood Rites". I've also been flipping through Asimov's "I, Robot", which I haven't read in years.

Here's a bookish question: has anybody here read the original series of Stargate books, written pre-SG-1? I read three of them, but I think they're out of print now and I can't seem to find the other two. They were more what I had in mind as a followup to the Stargate - focused on Daniel and the people of Abydos.
