FlashForward: The Complete Series (2009)
If it had survived the cut, this DVD realease would be just in time to get ready for season 2; instead it's a memorial. The good news, though, is that it's now clear that FlashForward was one of those ambitious and in some ways innovative series that will be remembered just because of the attempt.
5 discs, DVD only. Features: Architects of Destiny - An In-Depth Examination of The Series From the Filming of the Pilot to the Season's Final Episode; Meet Yûko - Join YÃko Takeuchi, One Of Japan's Biggest Stars, As She Travels to The Flashforward Set In Hollywood To Play Keiko, Her First Role On American Television; Flashforward On Set - Get The Inside Stories from the Set with the Cast & Crew; Kangaroo? - Why Is There A Kangaroo Bouncing Around The Flashforward Set? Uncover The Mystery; Interviews With The Mosaic Collective; Creating Castastrophe: The Effects Of A Global Blackout; Go Behind The Scenes and Discover What Went Into Creating The Series' Most Iconic Scene, The Freeway Disaster; Flashforward: A Look Ahead; Bloopers; Deleted Scenes; Audio Commentary. More details below the jump.

The Vampire Diaries: The Complete First Season (2009)
Season 1 of The Vampire Diaries held together surprisingly well, and stayed focused on the brothers' evolving relationship with each other and the vampires' relationship with the town. Features: Into Mystic Falls: Bringing Vampire lore and the High School Experience from Page to Screen; When Vampires Don't Suck!: The Popularity of Vampires and the Fans Who Love Them; The Vampire Diaries: A New Breed of Vampires - Casting the Series; Unaired Scenes; The Vampire Diaries: Vampires 101 - The Rules of the Vampire; Creators/Director Plot Commentary; The Vampire Diaries: A Darker Truth Webisodes; Second Bite: Gag Reel; Downloadable Audiobook of the Bestselling Novel The Vampire Diaries: The Awakening by L.J. Smith.

Thanks for the heads up, Dan :flowers: I am interested in FF - I have heard some good things about it even though it was a bit low key mid season

This Week: Home Video (Sep. 6-13)
Monday September 6, 2010

Out on DVD and Blu-Ray this week:

Chuck: The Complete Third Season (2009)
Season 3 of Chuck involved a major transformation for the character, ramping up not only his abilities but his maturity and expertise as a spy. A shift that dramatic could have broken the show, if it had been built entirely around Chuck's ineptitude as an IT guy in the world of spies; but the framework of the show was plenty flexible enough to accommodate Chuck's character expansion. Features: Declassified scenes; Chuck-Fu...and Dim Sum: becoming a spy guy; The Jeffster Revolution: the definitive mockumentary; Gag reel.

Supernatural: The Complete Fifth Season (2009)
"Remember when we used to just hunt wendigos?" "Not really, no." The constant upping of the ante on Supernatural left them with literally no place to go but Lucifer, God, and the Apocalypse, incidentally necessitating some (often tongue-in-cheek) theology. The radical escalation of the early idea (two boys roaming the country quashing restless spirits) and the character development forced by Sam and Dean having gone through hell makes season 5 both a different show than it was in season 1, and a world-shattering culmination of its small-stakes origins. Features: Supernatural: Apocalypse Survival Guides - Bobby's Exclusive Video Collection; Ghostfacers: The Web Series; Producer/Writer Commentary on Episode 4, The End; Unaired Scene from Episode 9, The Real Ghostbusters; Gag Reel.

Smallville: The Complete Ninth Season (2009)
Season 9 shows Clark getting as close as he can be to becoming Superman without actually becoming Superman: he starts wearing the shield, and using it as a calling card; he develops a complex, passionate relationship with Lois: he becomes more immersed in the DC pantheon, meeting everone from the dour relics of the Justice Society to the clueless Wonder Twins; and the actions of Zod and the Kandorians force him to come to terms with his dual-planet heritage. Features: Commentaries On 2 Key Episodes; Unaired Scenes; Kneel Before Zod!: The Evolution of a Classic Evil Character; Absolute Justice: From Script to Screen Introducing venerable justice society of America Heroes into Smallville's Universe.

Doctor Who: The King's Demons (1983)
It starts out strong, with the Fifth Doctor, Tegan, and Turlough being welcomed, perplexingly, by King John as his "demons"; but the Master, who's behind what little shenanigans there, turns out to have an even more useless plan than usual (he wants to sabotage Magna Carta? Seriously? Even the Doctor is puzzled by the banality of the plot), and the story has one of the weakest endings of 80s Who. Notorious for the introduction of the failed robot companion Kamelion. Still it has some charms, and it's nice to have an "historical" so late in the series run. Bright spot: Gerald Flood's marvelous King John is almost worth the price of admission. Features: Audio commentary by actors Peter Davison (the Doctor) and Isla Blair (Isabella) and script editor Eric Saward; Bonus commenary by director Tony Virgo on part one only; Kamelion - metal man: short history of the Doctor's robotic companion, with Peter Davison, Nicola Bryant (Peri), Eric Saward and co-creator Chris Padmore (14 mins); Magna Carta: historical background (22 mins); Photo gallery (6 mins); Isolated music score; Production note option; PDF materials (DVD-ROM) radio times listings.

The Phantom (2009)
The Canadian/Syfy miniseries adaptation of Lee Falk's long-running comic, starring Ryan Carnes (who played Laszlo in "Daleks in Manhattan") as an adrenaline-junkie, tech-ready scion of a secret line of crime-fighters. It aired in June, not that anyone noticed. While it's not abominable, it has two basic problems: first, the modern updating strips the concept of its eerie gothic atmosphere; and second, Kick Ass had a better costume, no joke. Features: Interview with Director Paolo Barzman; Interview with Ryan Carnes 'The Phantom'.

Being Human: Season Two
HOME VIDEO--Out on DVD and Blu-Ray this week:

Season 2 of Being Human is nothing short of brilliant, and the DVD is an absolute must. Aiden Turner, Russell Tovey, and Lenora Crichlow take their characters to new and darker places, dogged by an implacable menace that's not so much the actual villains as the social hatred they represent--and which Mitchell, George, and Annie have thoroughly internalized. The supporting cast is impressive as well, led by Sinead Keenan (Nina), Lyndsey Marshal (Lucy), and the delightfully creepy Donald Sumpter (Kemp), all struggling desperately with their own demons; and Russell Tovey continues to hone his ability to be funny and achingly empathetic all at once. From the seismic shift in the vampire world that begins in the premiere, to the engrossing flashbacks of Mitchell's past, to the heartbreaking climax and chilling final scenes, this is compulsive television. Behind the Scenes Featurettes: Blood Bursting; The Caves; Unleashing the Beast; The Swinging Sixties; Behind the Makeup; Making the New Werewolf; Train Carnage.

Let Me In (2010)
Fans of the original Swedish fantasy thriller about the little vampire girl may be surprised it could be improved on, while folks who think there's no need for yet another vampire movie couldn't be more wrong. Check out the trailers and clips on the video page and catch a glimpse of what writer/director Matt Reeves is trying to do. More details below the jump.

HOME VIDEO—Out on DVD and Blu-Ray this week:

Iron Man 2 (2010)
The cocky sequel to the latest, and most fun, reinvention of the superhero could have been a huge let-down. Thankfully, not only is Robert Downey Jr. in better form than ever, the story he's galloping through is exactly what you want from the next chapter in Tony Stark's story--well developed, compelling, and a great popcorn movie all at once. Lots of new clips on the video page—be sure to check them out. Available in 1-disc, 2-disc, and 3-disc editions. Features on the 3-disc Blu-Ray include: S.H.I.E.L.D. Data Vault: An in-depth look at the Marvel Cinematic Universe; Commentary by Director Jon Favreau; Ultimate Iron Man: 4-Part "Making-Of" Documentary; 6 Behind-the-Scenes Featurettes including Creating Stark Expo and the Origins of Black Widow and War Machine; 8 Deleted Scenes. Caprica Season 1.0 (2010)
This is one of those series that might benefit from DVD-style multi-episode watching: a lot more happened in the first half of season 1 than seemed to at the time. The back half of the season returns the same day as the DVD release, Oct. 5, so if you plan to catch up first, set your DVRs. Features: Sneak peek at season 1.5; Includes both unrated and rated versions of the pilot episode; Deleted scenes; Behind-the-scenes featurettes; Video blogs; Cast & crew commentary.

Stargate Universe: Season 1.5 (2010)

Season 1 may have started out slow (which worked well in its own way, establishing the parameters of basic survival on the other side of the galaxy); but season 1.5 definitely got its adrenaline going, as the conflict between Rush and Young intensified in the face of new external threats. Features: Chatting with the Cast Featurettes; Designing a New Race: Space Aliens; Tanked! Elyse Levesque Goes for a swim; Kino Video Diaries; Commentary on All Episodes.

Medium: The Sixth Season (2009)
In season 6, the first season on CBS, Medium proves its durability while retaining just enough quirkiness to keep its formula fresh. Once Allison recovers from her surgery, Ariel gets increasing prominence as she faces maturity (and the end of high school). Features include making-of featurettes.

Thanks Dan :flowers: Good to see Stargate Universe coming out on dvd :D

Nad 10-11-2010 11:50 PM

Thanks Dan :)

Not sure if I'll get SG-U on DVD, but I'm definitely pondering getting Caprica... once there is a full season box that is, so most likely at some point next year.

How to Train Your Dragon (2010)
A fast-paced action-oriented animated feature that's also about friendship, How to Train Your Dragon is a lot of fun, and even a little inventive (for Dreamworks, anyway). Well worth a look, though more violent than it might appear (there's a lot of video on the video page). The two-disc version comes with a sequel short, Legend of the BoneKnapper Dragon. More details below the jump.

Dollhouse: The Complete Season 2 (2009)
It was a noble effort, but Joss Whedon's latest project was not a complete success. I haven't been this uneasy with the sophomore season of a show I really wanted to see succeed since Jericho—though there are a lot of amazing moments in season 2, especially in the last few episodes. Not a complete success, but definitely not a failure, and we still love Joss Whedon and Eliza Dushku. Features: Defining moments: a retrospective with Joss Whedon; Looking back: roundtable with Joss Whedon and cast; Commentaries on select episodes; Deleted scenes and outtakes.

Ghost Whisperer: The Final Season (2009)
It didn't have to be the last outing for Melinda Gordon—Ghost Whisperer was still strong, both creatively and in ratings, and the final season proves it. Features: The other side webseries; Grave mistakes - a spooky interactive game through a haunted cemetery; Interactive haunted dollhouse - help Jim's spirit escape from a ghostly dollhouse!; Interactive fashion style guide - see the Ghost Whisperer character's costumes come to life; Love Never Dies - cast and crew interviews on the show's dramatic season; The Jamie Kennedy experiment - a behind-the-scenes look at Jamie Kennedy; Scoring the spirit world - composer Mark Snow discusses Ghost Whisperer's haunting score.

The Bionic Woman: Season One (1976)
Rights issues that long prevented the North American DVD release of The Bionic Woman and The Six Million Dollar Man have finally been resolved, and this set, the first season of the original bionic spin-off series, is the first fruit of that breakthrough. (The parent series is also set to be released on DVD starting later this year, but an exact date has not been announced by Universal Home Video.) There will be a lot of nostalgia buffs picking up these classic episodes, only to smile or wince, according to temperament, at the occasional cheesiness and occasional bizarre turn. But there's a reason this show, and star Lindsay Wagner, became famous. Features include five episodes of The Six Million Dollar Man involving the origins and later match-ups of Steve Austin and Jaime Sommers; Gag Reel; Bionic Beginnings Featurette; Photo Gallery; Audio Commentaries with Creator Kenneth Johnson, Writers, and Directors.

This week - Doctor Who S5:

Quote:

Doctor Who: The Complete Fifth Series (2010)
Succeeding David Tennant's popular Tenth Doctor wasn't an easy task for new Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith—as tall an order as taking over for new series creator Russell T. Davies was for Steven Moffat. Smith found a new way to twist together the Doctor's alien quirkiness and a charm based in deep compassion, while Moffat indulged in his love for the series by celebrating the Doctor's infallibility which—somehow—is intricately intwined with his gaping vulnerabilities. The result was a brash and color-saturated first season for the Eleventh Doctor, uneven and weird, brazenly marching right up to the Doctor's indispensability (from Winston Churchill ringing him up to help him out of a spot of bother, to having the universe literally end when the Doctor is taken out of time) rather than merely suggesting it as the show had done in the past. The throughline story involving Amy Pond and the crack in her wall is the season's saving grace, and Karen Gillan's rich performance is a constant joy—perfectly leavened by Arthur Darvill's sweetly ordinary Rory, whose love for Amy survives even Rory's death (and two rounds of nicely handled undeath). Despite the erosion of subtlety the fifth season is a solid introduction for a Doctor whose development will be worth watching. Bonus features include "Meanwhile in the Tardis," newly filmed bridging scenes between the stories; Doctor Who Confidential; "Monster Files"; In-Vision Commentaries; Outtakes; Video Diaries.
