Sci-Fi/Fantasy Off Topic #3: Welcome to the Fold

Ok, we didn't have one, and we need one, this is a get to know you type thread, and just a shoot the crud thread.

Let us know what's going on with your life, how you're doing and what's coming up.

For me, it's pretty much about Episode III, but I have time for many other things.

Twilight isn't about vampires, it's about teenagers with sharp teeth.
Vampires don't "sparkle" in the sun: they screech in horror, burst into flame and wither to ash.

Episode 3? As in Star Wars ep 3? And that's on an OT thread because it's too crappy to call SF?

I've been disappointed in Episodes I & II, so I'm not expecting too much from III. Still, it's something I'll have to see because it's Star Wars. Hopefully the storyline and acting of Anakin's turn to the Dark Side is believable.

Bought my son the Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy book set on the weekend and he's loving it. I read the first two quite a while back, but could never get the rest of the books in the library, so once he's finished I'll have to get started on it.

How disappointing of a Sci-Fi fan am I that I have zero interest in the Star Wars movies? I'm so bad.

Considering the way Lucas has been screwing things up and blackening the whole name of Star Wars, that's not so unreasonable.

So anybody have anything else to discuss apart from how crappy Star Wars has gotten?

Hmm, well does anyone think that War of the Worlds might actually be decent?

I'm worried about it somewhat..

I'm not a cruise fan at all.

So I get to go to a wedding this weekend...I'm dreading it greatly....sigh, it's just not going to be enjoyable.

Cruise can be annoying at times but he can also do some very effective stuff (such as in Born on the Fourth of July and Collateral, for example). But the movie's also got Tim Robbins, Dakota Fanning and Miranda Otto, all of whome I can seriously do without. Plus, the book, like many so-called "classics", is sorely overrated. And I'm little tired of Spielberg's approach to filmmaking.

Surprisingly, Tom Cruise is the bright spot of the cast for me, I'm not a fan of any of the others. None of the big budget movies look great to me really. Batman Begins or whatever it is looks boring to me too. Funny how that works out, now that Katie Holmes and Cruise are dating. Am I the only one that finds that pairing just so odd?

Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise? The big smile and the big frown together?

Just not a side of the family I appreciate all that well.

I'm Jerry, by the way, feel free to call me by my name if you'd like.

I just can't believe, she's 16 years his junoir, and 3 inches taller.

Not Jeri Ryan, I hope.

Funny thing is there's a conspicuous Irish radio personality called "Gerry Ryan". And he doesn't seem to be a borg woman.

Well, she wouldn't be the first person to date somebody a good deal older. As for the height difference, I think it's time society learned to stop kvetching when a shorter guy dates a taller woman. If the gender were reversed, nobody'd see anything odd about the height difference. Heck, people don't see anything odd even when the guy is a whole FOOT taller than the woman, so I think people need to learn to get used to guys dating taller women/women dating shorter men. If Cruise is going to keep dating taller women, well, good for him. He's giving the finger to society's narrow standards.
