Max Headroom Appreciation #1: 20 minutes into the future

I had the pleasure this weekend of watching the entire 13 episode run of Max Headroom for the first time in many years (plus the original UK pilot). There are a lot of shows I watched as a kid that I just can't rewatch now without cringing a bit (like V for instance), but it turns out Max isn't one of them. If anything, I can appreciate it even more now, and a lot of the subjects they dealt with seem rather prophetic in hindsight.

Anybody else around here a Max Headroom fan?

It's been almost 20 years, but I remember watching Max fondly. Matt Frewer really was the heart of that show - in both roles he played.

Blipverts and exploding viewers,

pirate TV stations that move from place to place,

your credit card works as your door key,

It's all a little hazy for me, but I do remember, and I did enjoy it. That show deserved better. My local ABC afilliate preempted it most episodes - luckily, I live in a place with a second ABC station, so I saw them in fuzzy vision - maybe that's why I'm a little hazy about the episodes.

I think I missed an ep or two when they first aired, but I taped all the others (one of the first shows I ever taped religiously, on an old Beta VCR with a "remote" that connected to the machine with a cord). There was an ep made that was never aired, but a friend of mine managed to find a copy online for me.

Matt Frewer as Max Headroom/Edison Carter was definitely the heart of the show (and Canadian, yay!). But the supporting cast of quirky characters was pretty cool too: Bryce Lynch, Blank Reg, Murray, Theora.

I'm disappointed this show hasn't made it to DVD yet. You can vote to have this show put out on DVD here: http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/showinfo.cfm?showID=2297 (you have to be logged in to cast your vote). The vote isn't binding on anyone, but it is a major TV DVD site that gives studios an idea how much interest there is in such DVDs.

M-m-m-m-max Headroom! I used to love that show. And whenever I see Matt Frewer, I can't help but think of Max.
