List of Shows:

Tru Calling (Fox)

Low down: Tru Davies is a recent college graduate. After her promising start as a medical intern crumbles she finds herself working at the city morgue. Tru questions reality when she hears the cries of a dead woman, but when she awakes the next morning to discover that she is at the beginning of the previous day, she tries to prevent the woman's murder. Pitched as a cross between 'Run Lola Run' and 'Groundhog Day'.

Airs on Thursday, October 30.

***

Fearless (WB)

Low down:
Based on Francine Pascal's series of young-adult novels about a girl born without the gene for fear.

Airs: now being launched mid season instead of premiering in the fall schedule.

***

Carnivale (HBO)

Low down: Drama about a travelling carnival during the 1930s but with twist, the characters that inhabit the carnival all seem to have some sort of psychic powers.

Airs, Sundays, October (no other time given at the moment)

***

mmm I was sure there were more but these seem like the only ones that are going ahead.

Carnivale sounds interesting, plus HBO aren't afraid of more adult content. Tru Calling (hate the name) I'll probably watch. Not sure now about Fearless having read a few articles on how they aren't staying true to the nature of the books, that is bound to annoy a few number of people.

I've read a lot of the Fearless books, I'm excited about seeing that as a show. But from what I've heard, and I've not heard a lot, Rachel Leigh Cook is playing Gaia. I'm not convinced that she can play her that well.

Also look forward to seeing Tru Calling just because Eliza is in it. She was great in Buffy and Angel.

Totally. I think her desicion to not star in Angel was a good one. Personally I think Eliza had done all she could have as Faith. Seeing her in a different role is going to be good.

Don't forget about

Jake 2.0 (UPN)

Lowdown: Jake Foley is a young, slightly geeky National Security Agency technician who harbours a secret desire to rise from his low-level position and become an agent himself. During a "freak accident" he is infected with nanites, which give him a dazzling array of superpowers, including "superhuman strength, lightning-fast speed, heightened hearing, razor sharp vision and the telepathic abilities to communicate with computers".

When Jake's newfound abilities are discovered, the National Security Agency places him at the centre of a new Special Ops team. But once he is thrust into his new role as a secret agent, Jake is forced to juggle his two lives as a superhero and a regular, twenty-something guy looking to enjoy life and find love.

Airs: Wednesdays at 9 PM EST, September 2003.

It sounds kinda campy but that's okay...

Some shows I'll definitely catch the first couple eps of to see if they're any good, but nothing I'm really excited about. *sigh*

Maybe one of those shows will turn out to be really good though, you never know.

Seems to me there's going to be a definite lack of Scifi this fall

Although I have to say, I'm really looking forward to Tru Calling. I'm a big Eliza fan, and the premise sounds pretty interesting to me. Almost like a supernatural Crossing Jordan.

As for Jake 2.0, still not sure. I like Chris Gorman, and I like David Greenwalt, who's the showrunner, so I might give that one a try as well.

Thanks Tim, I forgot about Jake 2.0. It sounds like it could be a lot of fun.

No problem!

There definitely seems to be a lack of good science fiction coming out this year. I'm looking through zap2it.com right now and I can't even find any other science fiction or fantasy shows. Needless to say, I'm highly disappointed, and with all the comedy coming in, I guess I'll have to cling harder onto the dramas that I watch now...

Ugh.. this tv season is going to be pretty boring.. oh well.. I'll probably check out Tru Calling, Fearless, and Jake 2.0 just to see what they are going to do with them. I've seen the pilot for Fearless and Tru Calling and they both have potential but knowing my luck if I like them they won't last a season but if I hate them they will last waaaaaaaayyy too long. I keep saying I'm going to have to get a life but so far I've procrastinated doing so just in case.

I can't say as I'm excited about any new shows or heck even any returning ones.

We need more sf/f, vamps and pirates on air. That is such an understatement.

Quick thoughts:

Jake 2.0 (UPN) .. has potential but on at the same time as Angel. It has an earlier start date so I'll check the first few eps before I head back to LA.

Tru Calling .. ED is awesome. So yeah I'll watch.

Century City ... mid-season .. haven't seen enough about it to decide yet.

Fearless .. the move to midseason was probably a good idea. It'll be tough for RLC to pull off the title character as fearless and not emotionless imho.

Tarzan .. maybe .. the boy is easy on the eyes.

Battlestar Galactica .. this has the potential to go so wrong. But I'll watch.

Dead Like Me (Showtime)... OMG this is such a great show. I highly recommend.

Joan of Arcadia .. probably not .. but we'll see.

Steven King's Kingdom Hospital .. midseason .. yeah I'll watch.

Still Life .. could be interesting. The dead cop perspective will have me tuning in at least at first.

Wonderfalls .. not sure about this one.
girl hears voices .. shouldn't this be on a medical channel.
-------------------------------------------------------------
So it comes down to .. I'll give any show with a sci fi or fantasy angle a shot. But only a few make it to my vcr timer.

I'm not excited in the least. I'm very cynical now, so I probably won't bother with any of these shows since I know they will just be cancelled and my heart will be ripped out and stomped on again, or the shows will suck. I just can't keep putting myself through that.

Battlestar Galactica is just a mini-series at this point and I won't give SciFi my eyeballs for it and I hope Neilsen families don't either so the mini gets horrible ratings and the show dies there. But watch it get lower ratings than Babylon 5: Legend of the Rangers, and still get picked up as a series. This is an insult to all original BSG fans and I have zero interest in it since it's a shoddy retelling by one of my least favorite genre writers. I'll just try to find the books by Richard Hatch instead.

The problem with Dead Like Me is that it's on Showtime and that poses a few problems in terms of access for a lot of people. For example, me. I've been trying to watch the pilot since I don't have the channel and I live in Canada, but it's taken me forever to get it since it doesn't seem to be too popular on Kazaa.

Otherwise, the next season is so dead. Just crap after more crap after crap. More and more comedies, more and more copycats, less and less originality, less and less interesting premises, less and less sci-fi. There needs to be a new really high-caliber sci-fi show out there that is shown on the big five channels. Otherwise, no matter how much critical praise it gets, it'll just be a small little show with a dedicated fan base, which means nothing to the corporate ratings pigs.

On a side topic, does anyone wonder why there isn't a strong presence of fantasy on television? I mean, there are random shows like Beastmaster or Witchblade (to an extent) or even Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World, but nothing truly respectable in the CSI/ER kind of glamour glitz vein. Is it because it's too out there? Too weird? Too fictional? Ideas?

Rachel has been filming Fearless here in Toronto. Even though she lightened her hair, I don't think she looks anything like Gaia. And from the few scenes I saw in an interview, I get the feeling that this series is only loosely based on Fearless. I think they are trying to re-vamp the series so that it has a more Alias-type storyline.

Quite often actually. I think it's partly because it lends itself to actual story arcs .. and mainstream viewers and tptb want more and more stand alone eps.

TV just becomes more and more unfullfilling. Then we'll get the occasional glimmer of hope in a quality program only as Soz posted to have it ripped away cause it doesn't get ratings.

I'm sure Dead Like me will be on DVD at some point. In the meantime don't give up on the file sharing programs .. it's still fairly new so it'll show up more as more folks get into it.

There's really not any new television show that I'm anticipating that much this year. I may turn on Tarzan and Jane and Tru Calling if I got the time, but that's about it.
