| Orson Scott Card Well, I never saw a thread for this topic so I am going to start one now for the subject of my passion in life. I'm sure that amongst a group of sci fi-loving individuals there will be a good handful of Card readers. Especially considering the sheer amount of work he has out there. So, lets get this ball rolling. Favorite of his books? [Either the one you love best or one from each category (if you are that well read of his stuff): sci fi, horror/suspense and fantasy.] Favorite character and why? Favorite quote (if you have one)? I'll start us off. Fave book-- sci fi no brainer--Ender's Game. Was a total surprise to me how much I fell in love with this book recommended to me by a middle school librarian. But I still call it my favorite book of all time to this day. horror/suspense This one is really hard. There are two that are up there but I will go with Homebody. In case anyone has not read it, I will not go into details but it told a very unusual and compelling story. fantasy Enchantment--A perfect blend of fantasy, time travel, comedy and romance. Probably my second favorite book of all time. Favorite character: Hands down, Jane. I will go into more detail if I get responses but I just think she is a really fascinating and enigmatic character. By virtue of the fact that she exists even though she doesn't really exist. That she evokes vast amounts of love and compassion and tangible relationships despite the fact that her essence, itself, is not tangible. Quote: I will have to look that one up. There are lots. | I think Ender's Game was the best of that series I read most of the next ones, but the one I reread most is the first. | I totally enjoy Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow and Xenocide Lost Boys broke my heart. I like his novels. They're interesting. I have yet to read his series on Biblical women, but I hope to in the future. I didn't care for Enchantment. I found it hard to read my way through it. I also enjoy the first couple of books of his Homecoming series. I have started Treason. The premise is a bit weird. I also have The Worthing Saga and The Folk on the Fringe on my list to read. | |||

| I liked Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow like stinky pointed out. But the follow ups for both were disappointing b/c they could've been much more. I actually didn't think much of Jane in Speaker of the Dead. I thought Jane was petty for being cut off from Ender for that short period of time. | |||

| I liked Jane most of all in Children of the Mind. The story about what happened to her and the thing with young Valentine was just heartbreaking. For some reason Jane reminds me of Tinkerbell. That tiny little voice sitting on the shoulder of the boy who will never grow up (in in this case, only because we will always remember the young Ender from the first book). Tragically in love with her confidant but never able to be with him because she isn't like him. Maybe it's just me but I think she is totally cool. __________________ Joe Bradley: You should always wear my clothes. Princess Ann: Seems I do. ~ Roman Holiday ![]() | |||

| But then remember, El Yosso, that "short period of time" seemed like eons to Jane. __________________ Joe Bradley: You should always wear my clothes. Princess Ann: Seems I do. ~ Roman Holiday ![]() | |||

| Yeah that point was driven home in Speaker of the Dead... . I just got to Jane's chapter in Xenocide and I thought it was cool of Jane to help Miro talk by using that computer panel and mimicking his face/voice. | |||

| oh! i love orson scott card! i could go on for hours about how much i love his works, how great, thought-inspireing, awing...basically, how incredible everything he does is. my fave book of all time is Ender's Game. hands down. there is no better, imho. treaure box was great, aswell, though i havent read it in a while. and i'm going to read lost boys soon. favourite character:...peter, out of both the ender wiggin saga and the shadow series. he's so funny and smart and i think he's really cool, though horribly sadistic. favourite quote: i'll get back to you. __________________ "You know the best thing about it?- It wasn't at all like I imagined" Niles When the time came to leap in faith, whether you had your eyes open or closed or screaming all the way down or not made no practical difference. | |||

| My favorite books was Ender's Game, as it seems is the majority opinion, with Speaker for the Dead as a very close follow-up. I liked a lot of his short stories as well. I'm currently reading Treasure Box right now. I can't really give an opinion right now because I'm still in the beginning, but it seems interesting so far. I read on the official site some time ago that OSC has agreed to have Ender's Game made into a movie. Wolfgang Petersen (director for the upcoming movie Troy) is the director for this movie, and I believe that OSC is currently writing the screenplay for it. They also plan to integrate Ender's Shadow into the plot. I can't find the original article to this, but there is a question about the movie that he answers. I can't wait to hear more about this. [ETA: Here's a kind of old article about bringing Ender's Game to the big screen.] [ 11-13-2003: Message edited Andia ] __________________ | |||

| i've heard about the EG movie, but i think it wont be good if it were done as a real movie...you know? like, it would be better if it were animated, vos then the battle room scenes would look just as real as the rest, and they could get beans real height. i mena, he's supposed to have fitted into a toilet, how can they get a kid that small? and i read somewhere that they're prob cutting the scene with ender and val on the raft when ender is earthside. the part with the wasp. how crappy! that's one of the best parts in the book, coz it shows how much ender has changed from the innocent boy val used to know to the one in front of her. would be bad if it were cut. phew, well, that's my rant c-ya'z edited to say that treasure box is really good. imho [ 11-14-2003: Message edited rosey angel 2 ] __________________ "You know the best thing about it?- It wasn't at all like I imagined" Niles When the time came to leap in faith, whether you had your eyes open or closed or screaming all the way down or not made no practical difference. | |||

| Addicted Fan ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I think that Ender's Game is a really good book. Speaker for the Dead was good also but not quite a good and I haven't finished Ender's Shadow or any of the other. I haven't read any of Card's other books but I'd like to. Also, I think an Ender's Game movie would be really good, if they did it right. __________________ Come stop by the Books Board for a visit. "There is nothing to writing.
