NBC picked up Grimm and Awake (formerly REM), but not Wonder Woman.

NBC Picks Up Playboy, Grimm and Awake to Series, Renews Parenthood
May 12, 2011 08:57 PM ET
by Natalie Abrams

NBC has ordered new dramas The Playboy Club, Grimm and Awake for the network's 2011-12 fall lineup. They join this week's earlier pick-ups, which include a comedy starring Christina Applegate and a musical from executive producer Steven Spielberg.

The network has also renewed Parenthood and Harry's Law. Parenthood, starring Lauren Graham and Peter Krause, averaged 6.7 million during its second season, and Harry's Law, from David E. Kelley, averaged 9.39 million viewers in its first season. Earlier Wednesday, it was reported that NBC's spy dramedy Chuck is also nearing a deal to return for Season 5.

The Playboy Club is a period drama (which TVGuide.com had spotlighted as one of its 11 Promising Pilots) that explores the lives of the first Playboy bunnies and the men who adored them. Amber Heard, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, Eddie Cibrian and David Krumholtz star. Brian Grazer (24, Parenthood and Friday Night Lights) executive-produces.

Awake, formally known as REM, stars Jason Isaacs as a police detective who's involved in a traumatic car accident and wakes up in two fractured realities. The project comes from Kyle Killen, creator of Fox's short-lived Lone Star and 24's Howard Gordon. Wilmer Valderrama, Cherry Jones, Steve Harris, B.D. Wong, Michaela McManus, Laura Allen and Dylan Minnette also star.

Grimm, a dark and fantastical cop drama, features characters inspired by Grimm's Fairy Tales. The pilot was written and executive-produced by Jim Kouf and David Greenwalt (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel). David Giuntoli, Russell Hornsby, Silas Weir Mitchell, Sasha Roiz, Reggie Lee and Bitsie Tulloch will star. Kate Burton will guest-star in the pilot.

Also: Sad news about Wonder Woman. The network passed on the superhero pilot written by David E. Kelley that envisioned Diana Prince as the CEO of Themyscira Industries, EW reports. Although there was early buzz about the project, not all of it was good, most notably the widespread disdain for Wonder Woman's shiny new costume.

NBC is still expected, however, to order the Chelsea Handler comedy, Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea.

I'm surprised they didn't pick up Wonder Woman, since it's such a classic. But I suppose while it might have looked good on paper, while it maybe didn't screen well.

I have always known I'll be watching Secret Circle Maybe Awakening if it gets picked up.

I'm also interested in Awake.

Grim sounds like something I'd be all up in.

Surprising about Wonder Woman, but I'm guessing we may be all superhero'd out. Might give Awake a chance, though that cast doesn't thrill me.

There are a bunch of shows I plan to see the pilots of (pretty much everything remotely genre) but none I'm super-excited about.

I might be more excited about Terra Nova than I am if it hadn't been delayed by a year... that just can't be a good sign.

Transitions - Supernatural Web Series

I wanted to take an opportunity and introduce a web series called Transitions. It is an independently produced series that evolves in a story world of the supernatural with a current emphasis on vampires.

www.transitionstheseries.com

The series' first season is made up of 12 episodes and episode 8 s getting ready to stream this week. While its low budget and perhaps up to par with Hollywood's standards its definately has a place on the web.

Not all that familiar with the Wonder Woman mythology, but it seems the proposed TV show wouldn't have followed it.

That's a Problem.

^ That's definitely a problem when it comes to building a following, you'd guess they aim for the already existing fans as well as trying to build up new fans. Not sure how good an idea it would be to scare away the existing fans from the get go

Yeah, you wouldn't think...
OTOH, look what they did with Battlestar Galactica, the second version. Pretty much trashed the original series, which I liked; turned a bunch of stuff on its head; yet it seems to have been a success. Although I hated it & pretty much didn't watch except when my sister had it on or the last couple of episodes.

I read in the paper a few days ago that Marvel is going to be releasing comic book / graphic novel versions of Edgar Rice Boroughs' John Carter on Mars series. That would make a good start for a series, either movies or TV.

Ah, life beneath the hurtling moons of Barsoom.....

Hehe. Sounds interesting.

I'm getting intrigued by the Steven Spielberg-produced Terra Nova and Once Upon a Time, which seems to have a very good cast. Anyone else getting excited by some of the new shows?

"Little House in the Jurassic Park"? What could go wrong?

And I'm really that SyFy seems to be cancelling Eureka as of next season. Is NBC still connected with NBC/Universal, which runs the SyFy Channel? We seem to be getting more sci-fi on network TV than the former SciFi channel.

They're advertising Terra Nova very heavily, it seems to me. Could be a good sign!

There's going to be a movie with Taylor Kitsch in the main role.

New to the thread.

I am always siked for the new shows that are involved with the sci-fi/fantasy genre. I think I'm really excited for Once Upon A Time and Terra Nova the most.

It does still suck about Wonder Woman though. I wanted to see Adrianne as Wonder Woman.
