Oh I love it when they give elegance to the dark side! Though Thranduil is not that dark

True, he isn't that dark. But, I think that is why he is portrayed like this. His elegance is heightened, which makes his darkness that much more powerful. He isn't evil, just determined.

In my view, it signals power more than darkness, but if he was a bit more dark, then heaven help everyone, it does give that impression!

I like that. Very true. You might say that he keeps the light around him, represented by the beauty of his surrounding and appearance, to help control a wickedness that is buried deep. Look at how close Lady Galadriel came to turning evil, and she was much more kind and honorable than him.
