No Aragorn, no Saruman, No Sauron (not directly). But they may rework stuff.

And the big question is the second movie. They've basically said they can pull from anything in the Appendices for the Lord of the Rings in order to create that one.

The Hobbit is pretty self contained so that should be fine, but I'm still kind of iffy about a "sequel".

A sequal to the Hobbit? is that already planned? They can do all sorts of things with that.

Its good to see their not making huge changes to the book, even though Im sad we wont be seeing Viggo in this one.

Apparently, Guillermo Del Toro was in town on Tuesday for a special screening of Hellboy II. I just found an article about it online and here is the only Q&A concerning The Hobbit:

How far along are you on 'The Hobbit' and what's your vision for it?

The first movie will be a stand-alone piece, I think, with a different, painterly style than (Peter Jackson's) Ring Trilogy. The second one will start transforming into an act of absolute mimicry, and the last section of that movie will blend in the landscape, the color and completely try to do the best match. An adaptation has to preserve the best things in the book. There are a lot of idiosyncrasies in the book that are really beautiful and some of them are really cutting edge. Some people call it a children's tale by Tolkien, but I actually believe it's the one that's more free and more interesting formally. It's my favorite of all the books.

For those (including me) not familiar with the word painterly, this is what m-w.com has to say about it:
1: of, relating to, or typical of a painter : artistic <painterly attention to detail>
2: suggestive or characteristic of a painting or of the art of painting <painterly photography>; especially : marked by an openness of form which is not linear and in which sharp outlines are lacking <painterly brushwork> <a painterly landscape>

I saw Hellboy II over the weekend, and it once again confirms me that Guillermo was the best choice for this. He's got such fantastic vision, that I'm truly excited about this.
