Congratulations to Cate!

I saw that as well, dukesmom. I was somewhat disappointed in return of the king....Peter put such thought into all of picture, they need to show it.

According to an article on SciFI.com yesterday, Del Toro is very close to be named the director. He can't say anything until the paper works done, but the hints are there.

Bugger. I wanted Peter Jackson to direct it.

Peter's still producing it...which is good, plus I like Del Toro's vision on the movies he's done, and I think it's a good idea to separate these 2 movies from the original three, at least style wise.

And there was much rejoicing!

Now, we need Andy Serkis back.

And Hugo Weaving as Elrond. Elrond did appear in the Hobbit, right?

So I'm happy enough with del Toro as director, and McKellen as Gandalf is great news.

But who else is really worried about this "sequel" movie they're going to do after The Hobbit?

Elrond is the Hobbit, if I recall...he presented Bilbo with the Sting, didn't he.

It's not so much a Sequel, as it's splitting the movie. They're going to go into that 40-50 year stretch in the book and tell a bit about it. Some of the short stories dealt with it (I believe) so they might bring some of those to life....but that's basically what they're doing.

The first movie is the first half of the Hobbit...the second movie is the end of the Hobbit.

I've been doing a little digging and it seems like there was some inaccurate information on the initial announcement.

Reuters original reporting referenced the second movie spanning the 60 years between the Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. But a later report stated that both movies are based on The Hobbit Only.

I hope the second version is right. There's enough material in the book for two movies I would think and I doubt they would be able to weave a coherent story out of the intervening years.

I see their reporting Andy Serkis is almost certainly on board too...

I think that would have to be a must. Gollum simply can't be anyone else.

Again, if they base some of the "filler" material out of the short stories that JRR wrote, I'm ok with it....if they decide to make it up as they go, we might have issues.

I never read the books, so it's all the same to me. But I think the studio and writers know they can't fool the Tolkien fans.

I don't think there's really that much Bilbo Baggins material to work with outside of The Hobbit. He gets some mentions in the appendices of The Lord of the Rings, but they aren't at all fleshed out. They'd be taking 3 sentences and turning it into a story.

Or am I forgetting something?

That's about as much as I can remember too, however, they've built off of less....I can think of 2 paragraph Steve King stories that became feature length movies.
