Lost Girl Series (Showcase) Appreciation #1

Did anyone else watch the premiere last night? Right now Lost Girl only airs in Canada on the Showcase channel.

Synopsis

"Lost Girl is a daring new series about mysterious young Bo, a succubus who drains the sexual energy of humans to feed, heal... and kill. Having survived for years alone, she now discovers she is one of the fae, creatures of legend and folklore who secretly feed off humans in myriad ways. Relieved to find out that she is not alone, but horrified by what it means, Bo chooses a dangerous middle path between the humans and the fae while embarking on a personal mission to unlock the secrets of her origin."

My thoughts…

I actually….enjoyed… the pilot. A lot! This is a rare thing for me to admit when it comes to Canadian television. I am one of those Canadians that usually cringes at our cheap and poorly written home grown productions. Yes, in recent years our dramas have gotten much better, but as a SF/F fan I have been waiting for something original in this genre to impress me. This could be it. There is obviously room for improvement in Lost Girl, but at least the pilot sets up a solid launching point.

I am relieved Canada resisted the trend to do another vampire/werewolf series and opted instead for the fae mythology. I think the mythology of the fae is fascinating and has all sorts of possibilities story-wise. The casting looks solid to me, and I am already hooked on the characters. Despite the sexual nature of the protagonist, the series doesn't appear to be hard-core adult drama. You won’t find any similarities with True Blood here, but the series might remind you of Buffy, Harry Dresden or Blood Ties. However, this being the Showcase channel…they might have more flexibility with edgy content…we’ll have to see.

I think Showcase ordered 13 episodes. Hopefully Lost Girl gets rebroadcast in other markets. It needs to pick up that niche audience.

I just watched it.

I Love it. I am definitely going to stick with this show. You don't find alot of good Pilots these days and this was definitely one of the better ones.

Oh I watched it too!!! I wasn't sure what to think because I was thinking "blah another Canadian attempt at TV." But I thought the pilot was really fun.

I like Bo and that she uses her powers not necessarily for fun but as a means to an end basically. She does because she can.
Her new "sidekick" was pretty awesome although I didn't catch her name.

Huge props for going with Fae mythology instead of vampire stuff. I hope that they find a US distrubiter and it can get a solid fan base, although it would be cool to have a little Canadian show all to ourselves.

Yay, more viewers!

Well apparently Sunday's pilot had an audience of about 400,000. That's good enough to make it the highest rated "Canadian scripted series" for Showcase (even surpassing their Haven co-production). I really hope they get going on a distribution deal for foreign markets. When I surf the net I see a lot of people watching Lost Girl via streaming & torrents because they can't get it in their country. More money from distribution deals could mean they cut down on those long commercial breaks.

I wonder how deep into the mythology they will delve? My knowledge of Fae/Fairy folklore is limited to just the Merry Gentry books and Brian Frouds fantastic illustrations and movie designs. So I am a bit confused as to how Bo can be a Succubus. I always though Succubus were demons? And she didn't checkmark "I am Demon" on that napkin survey. lol

Only 2 Andie.

I really liked the second episode and I really liked the plot twists. I even like the mercenary who could lose his head, that was pretty sweet.

Am I the only one that doesn't really see any chemistry with Bo and Dyson but see major chemistry with Bo and the Doctor?

I think the problem with Dyson is that Kristen Holden-Ried is playing the part too stiff. I'm not familiar with his acting credits, so I don't know if he naturally acts this way or if he's still trying to get comfortable in the role. Could be he's not used to delivering weird hammy dialogue that a show like this requires. btw...doesn't he look like a rugged version of Chris Martin. lol

The 2nd eppy was good, but a little slow compared to the pilot(which was too fast). I think the writers will need a few more episodes to find the right pacing. I'm a bit wary of the idea that Bo will end up doing odd (Supernatural) jobs to uncover information about her past. It could be interesting as a premise, but how effective can her and sidekick be when they have ZERO experience with investigating?

Ok, it seems my concerns in my last post were laid to rest in tonight's episode...because I thought tonight's episode found the right balance of awesome. It was like watching old time Buffy. I can't recall which season it was, but I believe BtVS also had an episode with an underground monster and missing girls. So the plot from tonight was far from original, but the way the episode unfolded was just really fun especially with all 3 (Bo, Dyson & Kenzi) in on the action.

Dyson is starting to get very interesting now...

The detective work is more Abott & Costello than Dynamic Duo but I like it.

And nice to see John Kapelos pop up in this episode. Always liked him from Forever Knight....and of course The Breakfast Club/16 Candles/Weird Science.

I've watched the pilot by now and will continue to watch but not 100% certain about the show yet. It didn't grab me the way some other pilots did in the past

I watched the second episode. It was quite good. I'm glad we're finding bits about the mythology and Bo's parents.

Watched the pilot episode the other day, not quite sure of it yet.

I think it needs some more episodes to get to its feet so to speak. Hopefully the next few episodes will drag me in.
