Great book...i may have to look into getting that

I mean... I don't care if is Peter Jackson or Del toro. I don't understand production details, effects and stuff. All I do is watch and be amazed!

I haven't seen Hellboy!

I know PJ made an amazing work with LoTR and I really want to see the same in The Hobbit!

But I always struggle with the many characters that Tolkien uses, no matter what language. On the other hand I love the maps.

The German translation I read first when I was a teenager was good, but in the end nothing can be as good as the original.
That's the point.
I'm gonna try LoTR, but I can't even imagine myself reading Silmarillion in english!!

I have a fair knowledge about the names in english and I also own this to FF!

Yes, I'm gonna read it in english sometime! I use to read a few books in english but I believe LoTR will demand a lot of me cause Tolkien created concepts, words and stuff. May be kinda hard, but I'm up for the challenge!

And yes, I read LoTR in portuguese!
Well, the stuff he created is novel in either English or Portuguese. But I can see Tolkien being difficult, simply because he lets his language become complex sometimes, following patterns now uncommon in English speech--particularly in the speech of persons of rank declaiming on weighty matters:

Quote:
"Only the waning might of Gondor stands between him and a march in power along the coasts into the North; and if he comes, assailing the White Towers and the Havens, hereafter the Elves may have no escape from the lengthening shadows of Middle Earth."
Quote:
"Elf and Dwarf in company walk in our daily fields, and folk speak with the Lady of the Wood and yet live; and the Sword comes back to war that was broken in the long ages ere the fathers of our fathers rode into the Mark!"
At certain 'magical' moments, too, Tolkien would let the momentum of description carry his prose on and on:

Quote:
Then, whether Aragorn had indeed some forgotten power of Westernesse, or whether it was but his words of the Lady Éowyn that wrought on them, as the sweet influence of the herb stole about the chamber it seemed to those that stood by that a keen wind blew through the window, and it bore no scent, but was an air wholly fresh and clean and young, as if it had not before before been breathed by any living thing and came new-made from snowy mountains high beneath a dome of stars, or from shores of silver far away washed by seas of foam.
So, you can judge a little from these sentences what sort of time you might have with Professsor T. in English. But I wasn't suggesting you read the English versions through, but that you use them as references, comparing the English and Portuguese versions, at points where it might occur to you to do so.

The Silmarillion is not developed as a dramatic narrative story like LoTR, but is for the most part a much more consise account of many events with many participants. Nor is it, in the published form, all in J.R.R.T's words. I don't think you can just read the Silmarillion straight through, and really 'get' it. You have to take notes, at least.

From the events in it, Tolkien, with twice a human life and no other responsibilities, might have written a trilogy of trilogies, if the matter was fully-developed into LoTR-type narrative.

Sam, you really need to see Hellboy. Del Toro's got some great creature work.

The Silmarillion is the means by which all sleeps aides are derived.

Yes, I see!
I want to use as reference too, but I might give it a try someday!
As I said before I'm up for a challenge. And I might do it as well as a fan!

Enjoy! That's always the point.

That, or have your insomnia cured, in the case of the Silmarillion.....

Cryo, u must give it a try!
What is the problem? I know there are some boring parts... but there's so much left off from the movies!

I use to read it once a year, but I haven't for 2 years!

Hey, Don!
Are u up only for LoTR? I mean, in a fandom basis!

Oh, I've tried.....I just get bored of it. It's very political, and that's just not my cup of tea
