Why don't we fans of Star Trek pull together and buy the Star Trek Franchise from Paramount and make our own TV series and films. So what do you think?

Nice idea, but honestly, even if the rights were on sale, would the fans be able to raise enough money? The rights must be worth a fortune.

The fans would probably make bad Star Trek anyway. I wish a continuation of the 90s Trek universe had been made rather than a reboot, but the reboot wasn't bad, if you ignore Quinto's Spock and Pegg's Scotty (shudder). There's already unofficial fan-made Trek tv/film stuff with some approval and guest starring from various Trek celebs. But it's got somebody who's not Nimoy passed off as Spock, so screw that.

Hi guys

I'm after the name of a book with a plotline described roughly as follows:

A civilisation invents a quantum computer or two with self-replicating, self-modifying code who can exist in just about anything and subtlely manipulate it. Things are fine until the people of the civilisation itself change for the worse with access to such power, and they either wipe themselves out with the quantum lifeform's help or the quantum personality mistakes them for imposters and wipes them out. Realizing it's mistake too late, the quantum computer/lifeform terraforms the planet and reverse engineers a facsimile of it's parents, the civilisation. That doesn't go quite right either.

I'm sure there are at least a couple of books out there which are something like this, can anyone tell me their names?

I'm not sure what book that can be - I haven't read any with such a plot (though it sounds interesting!), and Google and Amazon didn't help either. Hopefully someone can help you.

I've been trying to remember the title of a sci fi movie I rented in the late 90's about a former NASA rocket scientist and three or so other talented friends or co-workers that built a space ship from discarded military rocket parts. The scientist left NASA because they wouldn't try his ingenious economical propulsion system, so he decided to do it himself to prove his theory. Their plan was to travel to the moon and collect as many items as they could that were left behind by the Apollo missions, return them safely and efficently to Earth, and sell them to museums or the highest bidders. They hacked into a NASA or similiar main frame super computer during off hours to provide guidance for propulsion and re-entry. The mission was going well until a computer tech shut down the main frame for scheduled maintenance. They had to come clean with the authorities to get the computer re-started to safely complete the mission, which, I believe, ended in New York's Central Park.

Does this synopsis ring a bell with anybody? I've followed a few leads and searched the sci fi, fantasy, and adventure movie lists from 1970 to 2000 and no luck. The closest I came was The Astronaut Farmer, which is similar, but too new and not it.

Any FTL drive is necessarily a time travel device as well. I like the Stargates, myself.
