The Dresden Files

Thought I'd start a new thread about Jim Butcher's Dresden Files series of books, soon to be a new Sci-Fi TV series.

Has anyone else been following this series? I've just finished reading the latest book, "Proven Guilty". It seems like they've been working on the TV version for an awfully long time now, but it looks like it'll finally be a reality on Sci-Fi (and Space) come fall this year. Not sure if they've decided on a start date yet - if anyone has more information, post it here!

I thought about picking up the series, but now that I've in the midst of Harry Potter, I don't have time.

I take it that it's a good series? I bunch of people I know have read it.

Twilight isn't about vampires, it's about teenagers with sharp teeth.

If you like the Buffyverse, you should like the Dresden files - the mythology is very similar. Harry Dresden is a great character too - the story is all told from his perspective, with a good dose of humour.

I read the first book a few years ago. I thought it was good but not great. Harry seemed too passive for a first person protagonist. Maybe he changes as the series progresses but my initial impression is that he is a bit of a bumbling gumshoe-type detective.

A TV series might be cool though.

You know ... Harry's tone hasn't changed much through the series, and they're still basically detective stories, but the series has become more about its own internal mythology than Harry actually working as a detective. Some go more into his past, others into various factions in the mystic world (werewolves, vampires, faerie, the White Council), and I like that aspect of the series. I also like the way Harry's magic was described ... which I suspect will be lost in the TV series, in the same way the subtleties of the magic in the Harry Potter series are lost as they become just flashy bolts of light characters fling at each other in the movies.

Jim Butcher seems to be building an arc into this series, certainly the events of each story have long lasting consequences. I got the impression from the latest book that the story was building up to something, some sort of big confrontation.

It seemed interesting when I checked it out in the bookstore but to be honest, I'm not much of a mystery kind of person, it's just not my thing. They looked pretty cool and if there's a TV show I might watch it, I don't really know though.

I really enjoyed the series and just finished Dead Beat. I wasn't too sure of the first book either thescoobygang, but Dresden kind of grew on me. I'm interested to see what the tv show will be like.

"Begun production"? I thought production began months ago.

Aww, they've cast someone other than James Marsters for Bob.

Heh, looks like they're going to get BSG to follow it up....hoping to draw that BSG crowd into the Dresden files.

I copied this from last week's TV Guide magazine:
Quote:
The Dresen Files (premieres Sunday, 1/21, 9/8c, Sci Fi Channel) If you crossed Harry Potter with The Rockford Files, you’d get The Dresden Files, based on Jim Butcher’s popular series of supernatural mystery novels. Paul Blackthorne (best known as biologist terroist Stephen Saunders from Season 3 of 24) stars as Harry Dresden, a Chicago detective who bills himself as a wizard for hire. He’s got a yen to use his strong magic to help folks fight the forces of Hell. (One case has Dresden reuniting a young woman with her renegade demon lover.) Says executive producer David Simkins (Charmed), “The tone of the show is serious investigative drama with a good sense of humor.” Because we were planning on taking it too seriously.
