Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Discussion #1: B/C Every Villian Needs A Good Evil Laugh

Hey Everyone!

I was wondering if there was anyone else out on FF who was as obsessed with Dr. Horrible as I was? I think Joss Whedon did an amazing job with this musical/ Super Hero satire.

The stars are:

Neil Patrick Harris - Dr. Horrible
Nathan Fillion - Captain Hammer
Felicia Day - Penny

For more info, you can go to Dr. Horrible

If I opened this thread in the wrong forum please move it or tell me so that I can open it in the right place. I wasn't really sure if it's in the right place.

Its as good of a forum as any for Joss' stuff.

I didn't get to see it, but I heard good things about the web site.

I think it's really witty and sooo entertaining, like everything else Whedon does.
If you have ever seen the Buffy musical episode, it's a lot like that.
The music is catchy and funny and the characters have great comedic lines and timing.

I was especially impressed with Neil Patrick Harris since I hadn't seen him much before. Of course I was familiar with Nathan Fillion ( Firefly and Buffy ) and Felicia Day ( Buffy ). They all sang very well.

If you are a Buffy fan than maybe you noticed that David Fury and Marti Noxon ( writers and producers of BtVS and Angel ) were the TV news anchor persons. They both had singing parts in the Buffy epi "Once More with Feeling". David was the "They got the mustard out" singer and Marti sang about getting the parking ticket. Also a couple of other writer/producers of Buffy and Angel were some of Bad Horse's henchmen sitting around the table - Drew Goddard and Doug Petrie.

Joss dose like to keep it within the "family".

Oh wow I didn't know that. Now that you mentioned it, I do remember the "I got the mustard out" thing and it was them.

It's true Joss likes keeping it in the family. The more familiar he is with his actors/staff the more he uses them. It's cool to see the same faces in different Joss projects. He always recasts the best.

I was impressed with Neil Patrick Harris too. He was really good in both his acting and singing.

I heard that there might be a sequel. I don't know how true that is.

Oh you really don't like Whedon's stuff?

The only thing I really don't like is BUffy the movie that he put out before the show.

However, I loved BtVS, some seasons more than others. I also loved Angel, Firefly, Serenity and now Dr. Horrible.

Joss wrote the script for the movie but was not the producer. He intended it to be more like the TV show ended up being but lost out to the producers. I think he either left the movie or was pushed out because of the creative differences. The producers of that movie are sited as exec producers of BtVS TV series but had no input in it. They had to be sited because they "owned" the Buffy character or something like that.

In BtVS when Buffy refers to burning the school auditorium down when in LA, that was is in the original script but not in the actual move.

I watched the first three installments last night. Quite amusing. I told a co-worker about it today and sent him the website. He had never heard of it.

There's been a lot of bad stuff. Like so much of season 7 of Buffy, like Angel seasons 2-5 and Serenity. Firefly had its good points but it was seriously faulted and overrated and its central character could be a lot better and is basically a scumbag being passed off as a nice guy.

One thing that sort of surprised me about the blog was the lack of lyrics to help me sing-along. I just figured if it's called "sing-along" then there should be words on the screen and a bouncing ball or something to guide me through the songs.

Maybe they'll have a karaoke version on the DVDs.

It was very good. I generally feel Joss has been in a decline period for most of this decade (Buffy season 7, later seasons of Angel, Firefly, Serenity, Buffy and Angel comics, Dollhouse), but Doctor Horible was the exception. It was really good. I was amused by Nathan Fillion's performance. I think playing an egotistical misogynist suits him. I always thought Mal Reynolds was like that under his more acceptable surface.
