Sherry, Spike was not the first vampire "love" for Buffy. First there was Angel. Spike is one of the best characters of the show and after Buffy's show ended he continues on for one scene on Angel.

I think to say how things worked out for Angel or Spike and their love for Buffy would spoil things for you if you ever want to watch. I will say Spike is my favorite character of that verse.
