Avatar Discussion #1:

Avatar is a 2009 American epic science fiction film written and directed by James Cameron and starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Joel David Moore, and Michelle Rodriguez. The film is set in 2154, when humans are mining a precious mineral called unobtanium on Pandora, a lush moon of a gas giant in the Alpha Centauri star system. The expansion of the mining colony threatens the continued existence of a local tribe of Na'vi—a humanoid species indigenous to Pandora. The film's title refers to the genetically engineered Na'vi-human hybrid bodies used by a team of researchers to interact with the natives of Pandora.

"Discussion"? As in not just an appreciation thread? Because I thought Avatar was shallow and racist.

Oh, my movie. Maybe I should watch it one day.

Overall, I have heard both good and bad things about it - should I give it a try?

Well, for starters, the Navi need a human to save them and when this human gets in his Navi suit he's suddenly the coolest Navi around. It's the old white-messiah-to-non-white-people trope. That's insulting to non-white people, seeing as that's who the Navi stand for. Also, the humans are kind of the white people and the non-humans are stand-ins for non-whites and the humans are mostly evil imperialists who must be killed off and driven off. So that's pretty vicious stereotyping of white people and anti-white sentiment (white self-hate, seeing as the director is white). So the film's racism cuts both ways. Plus the humans are basically America, so that's beating America over the head. It was generally derogatory toward the human race, so it's anti-human too. Plus the film had every cliche going and was full of self-satisfied preaching. Finally, it was emotionally shallow and those Navi people just didn't look real.
