Women's Rights Discussion Thread # 2

So, on the last thread, we were talking about the ongoing disparity between the genders.

Quote:
He is the current minister of treasury and a couple of months ago he gave a speach about how Mexicans could live good lives on 500 dlrs a month.

Quote:
It's funny how such statements always come from people who don't have to lead their lives with 500 $/month.
I think it actually goes hand in hand, doesn't it? The only people who make statements about how easy it is to live with "name a small amount of resources" are the people who have never had to do so or whose financial struggles are so far behind them that they've taken on an aura of a formative experience.

It's fairytales, really.

Sometimes I wonder if they've told others those fairytales often enough, so that they even started believing it themselves...

I can certainly imagine a bunch of wealthy men, sucking on Cuban cigars and swilling their super-old brandy, sharing a laugh over how easy it would be to have their maid's life.

I can't really imagine there's a maid out there who would buy into it, though.

Thanks Vega, for the info about Mexico. I did not know Mexico City was so liberal.
Would be interesting to visit and see the art scene and subcultures etc.

Roman Catholocism still plays its part in subjecting women around the world, unfortunately, like those Spanish influences on the more equal society people in the Philippines used to have.

I'm male and I'm not rich so the whole "being a guy gets you more money than women" doesn't apply to me. I also have a college degree and guess how much I make a year? Drum roll... 15,000 a year is what I make.

Wage disparity is a real thing, but yeah men can make small incomes too. You are living below the poverty line I think.

Only if he is married. But yeah, it is a low wage in terms of the US.

The thing with wage disparity is not that men aren't getting payed less but that, in comparison, women are payed less than men in the same kind of jobs.

Vanora: You'd have alot of fun in Mexico City then, it has around 132 museums and art galleries. There's also the theater circuit and opera and classical music concerts, etc.

It's pretty. Although right now I'd be more careful about choosing a place to visit (for security reasons). But Mexico City is fine.

Cozumel is beautiful too, lovely beaches. I don't think there are security issues there either.

Human Rights First Urges FIFA, U.S. World Cup Team to Condemn Bahrain’s Attack on Athletes

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - In anticipation of Wednesday’s World Cup semifinals game, when the U.S. Women’s soccer team will take on France, Human Rights First calls on the members of the U.S. women’s world cup team and the international sports community at large to condemn Bahrain’s attack against its own athletes. Several Bahraini soccer players, including stars from the national team, were among those arrested for their participation in pro-reform protests in March. Many are now reporting that they were humiliated and tortured while in prison.

These reports of torture and intimidation against soccer players are emerging as the Bahraini government is holding a widely-criticized national dialogue with civil society to promote reconciliation and reform. “At a time when unity as a country is being emphasized by the Bahraini government as part of national dialogue, the attack against athletes undermines any notion of national unity,” said Human Rights First’s Brian Dooley, who left Bahrain today after a one week visit.

Among those arrested and reportedly beaten are stars from the national team including A’ala Hubail, his brother Mohammed, and Ali Saeed. A military court sentenced Mohammed Hubail to two years imprisonment last month, while criminal charges are pending against the other two athletes. All three players are presently out on bail.

Bahraini human rights defenders have reported to Human Rights First that the targeting of athletes has been particularly demoralizing amid the larger crackdown against peaceful protests.
“It is widely believed that members of the national team were arrested because of their popularity among the Shi’a community, and the reports of torture by the Suni-led government could deepen a sectarian divide in Bahrain,” added Dooley.

The Bahraini Football Association has formally assured FIFA that its players have not been suspended or sanctioned for any political action.

“Given the testimonies from those close to the soccer players and reports of continued harassment and intimidation, FIFA should launch an official investigation and possibly suspend Bahrain from the association,” concluded Dooley.

Awful. It appears some of the things they were asking were about upping women's wages and allowing children of women married to foreign nationals to acquire the nationality.

Woa, that sounds awesome. I always thought of visiting Berlin for its culture, but this sounds at least as great

The fact that you don't make a lot has nothing to do with the fact that women with college degrees still usually make less than men with the same degrees.

Vega I'm actually more surprised that the entire female soccer team wasn't tortured and imprisoned. Bahrain is really cracking down on human rights and human rights protesters right now. Women who have international recognition? Nevermind their participation in those events, the very fact that they travel abroad makes them dangerous for a regime like that.

Jacob Obviously, you're not making much. That's not even up for debate. But, yeah, women in similar positions will make less and also have less access to promotions that will get them salary bumps, however small those may be.
