Woman refuses to give back Hurricane Katrina evacuee's dog

Go here for the story.

Basically, what's going on is that John Wyrick tried to find a place for his dog Shuma after thinking that he had no other options in the face of Hurricane Katrina. He managed to find a home with this woman Lynn Nevills. Then, after he found a place for his family with room for Shuma, he asked for the dog back. Lynn refused, apparently because her kids have become attached to the dog.

Now, I don't know if Wyrick actually signed over ownership papers to Nevills...it sure sounds like that, considering how resigned Wyrick appears in the news segment. But ownership papers or not, I think any decent person would do the right thing by giving back the dog. People are actually trying to bribe the woman (up to 2000 dollars, I think) into giving back Shuma. While it's understandable in that it might be the only way to get owner and dog reunited, it's sickening to think that the woman might be rewarded for her selfishness.

Ugh, some people...

That is very cruel of her to do something like that. And I have to say that if i was the owner, I would be doing everything in my power to get the dog back. I wish him the best of luck in this matter and hope that he is allowed to have Shuma back.

Obviously, chances are that the dog might have not survived the hurricane if it was with the owner. The only reason he left the dog with this woman is so he could come back but this is really cruel. It doesn't matter if your children are attached to the dog, you gotta explain it to them and get them a new dog if necessary.

And we continue to learn about the excessive selfishness of so many humans... I'm sure the poor guy was devastated. You can't replace a best friend.

This ladies name should be plastered everywhere so people know what a selfish, disgusting human being she is.

As Ms Carolyn stated, everyone, write to the woman and tell her to give back the dog!! I would be doing everything in my power to get my dog back!

And lady, get yourself a new dog. Take the $2000 offered and buy your own dog. Don't keep another owner's dog just because your kids are attached to it.

Is this shown on news channels? Because this seems newsworthy to me

Has anyone heard if she's given the dog back yet? Can't he legally do something to get the dog back, surely its not legal for the woman to keep the dog. People can be so horrible, I really don't know whats wrong with some people. If it were me with my dog Mack, I'd be stealing him back, just go and take him.

It's my understanding that he signed the dog over to her, so Shuma is legally hers. But this isn't a legal issue, it's a moral one. I haven't heard anything on it, but hopefully the heat stays on her and she finds that one iota of decency she may have in her body.

Yeah, that's what I think, too. This is just one example IMO where the legal thing to do and the right/moral thing to do aren't the same.

Here's that address (and no, I didn't go stalking for it, it was posted on the Shuma website) to write to Lynn Nevills and tell her your feelings. Don't be rude, just suggest that she reexamine the ethics of her decision.
