Woman Arrested For Chewing In D.C. Metro Station

Woman Handcuffed, Held For Three Hours

POSTED: 7:21 am EDT July 29, 2004

WASHINGTON -- You can't eat and ride in the nation's capital.

A Maryland woman said a transit officer in Washington, D.C., handcuffed and held her for three hours after she finished a candy bar at a Metro station.

Stephanie Willett told The Washington Post she was heading into a station while eating a PayDay bar when a transit officer told her to finish it before entering.

They both agree that she put the last bit in her mouth -- but she says the officer followed her inside the station. After she made a comment, Willett said the officer searched, handcuffed and arrested her.

Willett was released several hours later after paying a $10 fine. A Metro spokeswoman said the woman was arrested for ignoring a warning.

I would think that a Metro station would have other things to worry about than someone eating a candy bar... like you know, keeping things safe and secure. But apparently not.

They did the same thing for a woman who brought a cup of coffee into the metro station. This was while back though.

I'll have all of you know that the DC subway stations are intensely PRETTY!!

...not that that matters. Since their security is draconian and have nothing better to do.

That's just crazy. I've ridden the Metro plenty of times, and its a rare time that i see a security person. but apparently they pop up if you're eating candy.

They should spend their time looking for real safety hazards instead of freaking out over a candy bar...

That's completely idiotic. How about they arrest actual criminals? Oh? I'm sorry, that would make sense.

That's f*ucking stupid.

That's the type of thing that would probably happen to me. I'd be finish a Snickers, minding my own business and next thing you know, some cop would have me hog-tied to a pole for daring to eat and enter.

After she made a comment? Sounds to me like she was being a little smartass... if that is the case, i think she deserved it. I work at a Pub and security get crap ALL the time... and people dont even have to be drunk they are just plain rude.

Well the reason they don't want people eating is because many people eat the candybar then throw the wrapper on the grounds. It just makes the trains and stations look dirty and gross and ends up requiring more time and money to clean. Also they want to keep the stations and trains free of garbage and whatnot after that anthrax scare...we had people eating powdered sugar donuts and then someone would come on after then and cry Antrhax. It was ridiculous.

The Red Line El train in Chicago, when I lived there, was always so dirty and gross beacuse no one follows the rules.

Anyways they went overboard, but I agree with Vampires_Bite, people DON'T know when to shut up

Yes...our subway stations here in D.C. are clean & tidy.

But there are ALWAYS bigger things that need to be attended to.

She didn't "deserve" it because she made the comment. The lady was following her watching her eat the PayDay bar....the lady kept telling her that she better finish that & the woman has said she had intended on finishing it before going in.

Sorry....but the "security" officer didn't need to keep on bickering at her - she was doing what she was told.

The lady put the last bite in her mouth & the security officer was still watching her & saying things. THEN the lady said, "why don't you go take care of some real crimes".

I think the security officer was harrassing her...I've seen it happen - and sorry but you have crazy young people always being loud & obnoxious & running around but a 40+ year old finishing a candy bar like she was told & then making a comment.

Waste of time.
