Wash. Preschoolers Given Dog Food To Eat

Fri Dec 10,11:02 PM ET

TACOMA, Wash. - A teaching assistant gave some preschoolers dog food to eat during a play-acting exercise at Northeast Tacoma Elementary School. A Tacoma School District spokeswoman said the children spat out the dry dog food and no one suffered any ill effects.

The teaching assistant has been placed on paid leave pending an investigation.

District spokeswoman Patti Holmgren said it happened Monday in an early education class while the supervisor was out of the room.

When a few of the students pretended to be puppies, getting down on their hands and knees and barking, the assistant attempted to encourage their playacting. She fetched a packet of dry dog food from another room and placed bits on paper plates on the floor.

The dog food came from a display intended to teach the preschoolers what not to eat, Holmgren said.

School Principal Pat Flores learned about the incident Tuesday after a parent complained. In a letter sent Wednesday to parents, Flores called the event "unfortunate."

I doubt the dog food would have hurt them in any way. That's just a really weird-ass way of teaching kids what not to eat.

Yeah, she's hardly putting their lives at risk (unless one kid is allergic to something in dog food, which she definitely should have considered), but it is definitely ridiculous way to teach kids something. Even though she didn't harm any children, she should have known that parents/teachers weren't going to appreciate her feeding pet food to kids Especially since the food came from a display to teach Pre-K kids what kinds of things shouldn't be eaten - contradictive much?

That's just really weird. Really makes you wonder about teaching methods nowadays.

God I thought they were like, fed it for lunch or something.

Eh, I'm sure they're fine. My brother used to eat dog biscuits. He once ate a pounce to impress his religion class and those things are nastier than dry dog food, he suffered no ill effects.

I've eaten dog biscuts before. Besides, the same grade meat in moist dog food is used in Military, Prison, and Taco Bell....lol, kind of funny actually.

Uh. I used to eat dry pet food. And those beggin' strips? Don't taste like bacon at all.

Let's pretend I didn't just admit that. But yeah once when I was a kid my mom (she played jokes on us all the time) was feeding the cats. I was watching through the window and I wasn't supposed to be up, and I saw her crawling around on the deck acting like she was eating it (to play a joke on me, since she knew I was watching). Well later on I went outside and tried some- I thought she had really ate it- and I kinda liked it .

beggin strips are pure plastic! My dog will not eat them, but she is a bit of a snob when it comes to eating

I just remember thinking "Man, these dogs are stupid if they 'don't know it's not bacon!'"
