Venezuela says NO to the Constitution reform...

Today, at 1:30 am, the results of the Constitution Referendum (which took place yesterday) were announced, with a 50,2% of votes against the reforms that would be made in the Venezuelan Constitution.

The president of the National Electoral Center, Tibisay Lucena, gave the first, yet definitive bulletin at the aforementioned time. Many Venezuelan citizens all over the nation (not to mention the ones overseas) celebrated the results.

Chavez would have been a step closer to being a dictator.

He would have been able to stay on past 2013 (he was trumpeting about wanting to stay through 2050) - and basically all his attempts to alter the Venezuelan constitution (IMO, to his benefit and to the detriment of democracy and freedom) would have passed.

So this makes me very very happy.

There's a long way between now and 2012 - I don't see a meglomaniac like Chavez going quietly if he wants to hang on to power, but still, good on Venezuela - whatever you may think of Chavez, term-limits are good for a reason as they prevent power from being consentrated in too few hands for too long a time.

Exactly! And even Simon Bolivar (who Chavez used to idolize) said that an eternal governor is a cancer for politics. So take *that*, Mr. Chavez.

Oh, and since I'm from Venezuela, and I voted against him...SQUEE!
