US Senator: brave people of Georgia need our solidarity
05.09.08 10:34

While delivering his Acceptance Speech, US Senator, the Republican presidential nominee, John McCain, has stated, `Russia's leaders, rich with oil wealth and corrupt with power, have rejected democratic ideals and the obligations of a responsible power`.

`They invaded a small, democratic neighbor to gain more control over the world's oil supply, intimidate other neighbors, and further their ambitions of reassembling the Russian empire. And the brave people of Georgia need our solidarity and prayers. As President I will work to establish good relations with Russia so we need not fear a return of the Cold War. But we can't turn a blind eye to aggression and international lawlessness that threatens the peace and stability of the world and the security of the American people`, he carried on.

The POW stuff is a good story and all, but it doesn't tell me anything really about how McCain would run the country. At the end of his speech when he started talking about it again, I turned the channel because I was sick of him bringing that up. It is an amazing story, but that doesn't mean you'll be a good president.

Gee that sure sounds familiar.

On the POW stuff...

Here's the way I see it. The big flaw with W is that he went after two separate wars at the same time when no one in his administration (except for Colin Powell the first time around, but it doesn't sound like they were listening to him much) had any military experience.

And, so, of course, seeing as the U.S. is still in those two wars, people now understand the necessity for the leaders to have some sort of clue as to what they're doing there. And McCain wants to appeal to both people who like W and people who don't. So he supports the war efforts, but at the same time he'll emphasize the experience he has.

The problem I have with that is that POW experience during the Vietnam war does not translate to understanding of how to negotiate these conflicts. It's certainly nothing to ridicule, diminish or trivialize. The man is a hero. Of that I have no doubt. But if all you have is decades-old war experience to rely on... All I'm saying is that it's good that he has military experience, but you need an understanding of how the world works today as well.

And again, I bow before the Republicans' ability to switch gears with the kind of total absence of self-consciousness I can only envy.

This is the same crowd who skewered John Kerry's Vietnam experience, is it not? McCain being the one exception to that, of course. Mind you, the last time round, this was the crowd who spread rumours about his so-called illegitimate black child throughout North Carolina on the eve of those primaries.

I did see that. It was awesome.

But what I really like about the Daily Show is how they point out the places and times where the regular media falls on the job.

Is the Daily Show really the only program aware of how ridiculously self-contradictory the Republicans are being?

Last night's theme was pretty clear. Fear mongering at it's best! Congratulating McCain yet again on his service to our country is one thing & even crediting Bush for avoiding another terrorist attack on our soil is only mildly gag worthy, but to show a triute to 9/11 as part of your campaign message is just despicable. To suggest that if we don't vote for McCain another terrorist attack will happen is typical Republican garbage.

seriously... and the fact that she rides hillary's coattails trying to sway the woman vote, when in actuality she stands against everything women have been fighting for, is rather pathetic... at least hillary fought for her position and has a right to stand before her party and be proud that she made history... and im not even a hillary supporter, but nonetheless, i loathe what palin is doing, ugh

What Palin doesn't get is that those 18 million cracks Hillary was referring to was the 18 million VOTES she earned over her campaign. McCain met with Palin & she convinced him in a matter of 15(but let's call it 18 for cracks ) minutes that she was his "soulmate".

Pray to God for a gas pipeline to be built? Our mission in Iraq is a religious matter?

Palin is pretty scary and if elected she could be downright dangerous. She's a female Bush.

I think the next few days or week will be a test for the U.S. media. McCain's campaign has pretty much said that they will boycott the major media outlets. Asking about Palin's experience and her opinions on issues is just so "sexist."

She will be pretty much protected from any spontaneous press conferences so they can control her message. We all saw how the base just fell in love with her this week. The Republicans need that to have a shot at winning.

The media should be questioning her record because there are some definite red flags there. Ir remains to be seen as to if they will - I'm sure they don't want McCain to be more mad at them then they are right now.

McCain did get one thing right last night & that was to appeal to the Independents. However at this stage it's too little too late IMO. The time to come back to the center was the day he won the nomination several months ago. Granted his right wing base would have likely been more galvanized had Hillary been the opponent, but the fact remains that the Independent voters are growing in huge numbers. By choosing Palin as his VP he sealed his fate with them IMO. The better choice would've been Lieberman/Romney. It's likely that Lieberman will be part of McCain's staff if elected, but by pandering to the right like he has for the past year it's really hard to TRUST his message. Even that has been shifted in the last week from experience to change. But as Barrack Obama said voting with Bush 90% of the time isn't change, it's more of the same.

I'm SICK TO DEATH of the POW card being so shamelessly used. I'm sorry it happened to him, but it does not in ANY way qualify him to be my President, in ANY way mean he's automatically earned anyone's vote. When he uses it to deflect his not knowing how many houses he owns, it's beyond gone too far.

One of the things that really bugs me is the way they bring up 9/11 just to get more votes. I find it so sick.

I was utterly appalled by that video, I only saw it today without really understanding what I was getting myself into (I'm speaking of the 9/11 video shown at the RNC). I'm absolutely disgusted and infuriated by it. #1, it was unncessarily graphic without warning- many of us do not need or want to see footage of the towers being hit or falling the way that video showed. I can only speak for myself and those I know, but I remember watching that on 9/11 with perfect clarity- I have no trouble remembering, and I get extremely upset having to watch it again. #2, their blatant misrepresentation of the facts in order to create fear, ignorance, and division was disgusting. They talked about it "starting in Iran"- WTF?! Iran is a largely Shia country- both Iraq and Al Qaeda are mainly Sunni. They clearly do not care about how difficult they make it for Muslims in general and how much misinformation about out there about Islam, so long as they can push their own military agenda that still doesn't bring us any closer to catching Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

The Republicans thinking they own the "we need to get the terrorists" card is ridiculous. The Bush administration is as at fault for 9/11 as the Clinton admininistration, if not more, and they are solely responsible for the mishandling post 9/11. I think Obama is MORE likely to get bin Laden than McCain.
