UN: Sudan had killings, but it wasn't genocide

Simply amazing:

Quote:
United Nations -- A U.N. commission concluded that the Sudanese government and militias carried out mass killings and probably war crimes in the Darfur region, but stopped short of calling the violence genocide, according to a report released Monday.

I think Don Cheadle sums this up pretty nicely:

Quote:
"We cannot stand here in a free society, proclaiming that we care about human life, and do nothing in the face of this, in my opinion," Cheadle said.

"People saw the film and said, 'Wow that was terrible. I wish I had known.' Now you know."

And everyone wants to let the UN run these world type problems.

Rwanda anyone? Where was the UN then?

It seems like everyone wants to just bury Rwanda and the Sudan. And The UN being COMPLETELY Impotent in those situations.

Whenever I hear someone speak of letting the UN run something..I think of the complete pussing out in rwanda..and the corruption for the oil for food program.

I will never support the UN.

Because of course America's done SUCH a good job.

That's not to say the UN dosen't have its many, many, many problems, but I'd feel much safer with a world body, than one country deciding what's best for the world.

I really can't understand how they can differntiate that it wasn't genocide.

I find it a pity that certain nations are going out of their way to create a circumstance to bring 'democracy' to Iraq but a 'ready-made' problem is there. It's a pity that unlike this so called 'terrorism' which we should 'fear', there is supposedly nothing to fear, nothing there to benefit from so it's basically ignored.

Tell that to the thousands of Iraqi civilians who have killed by the invasion by foreign forces.

The thing is, we are going to go round in circles with who people 'prefer'.

I personally see the value in the UN - it's a multinational body. Control and 'power' is better in multiple hands rather that in the hands of one country that will only look out for the interests of itself.

I wish we had done something to stop the killing in Sudan a long time ago.

We should obviously be doing something. What i'm wondering though is whyu isn't this a big story in the news? You've got thousands of people being raped and murdered daily and you never hear about this on the news. It doesn't make any sense.

It's been in the news. Time had an article on it a few months back and I have seen it on news programs. Didn't they reach an agreement in Sudan between the rebels and the government just recently? I think I read about that in my school paper.

ETA - I didn't want to seem like I think we have dealt with this. It disgusts me how little we have done, but I just wanted to point out that at least it's not being covered up or simply forgotten about.
