Are Troops Serving Too Much Time?

So, I was reading about this documentary that they are airing as another piece of that America at a Crossroads thing PBS did a couple months back, called Kansas to Kandahar all about this troop from Kansas who had to do a real extended tour of duty, and didn't get any breaks, etc.

It got me to thinking - and it really worries me to think that these people who are out there defending out country are maybe being forced to repeatedly return to the Middle East and not getting to come home very often. HOw often do you think stuff like that happens? How can it be prevented? It just seems very wrong to me...does anyone sle have an opinion on it?
