Topic of the Week #7: How have you made the best of the economy right now?

New week. New topic.

Even with all the news coverage and word of a current state of recession, what are you
doing to make the best of the whole economic situation and to get through daily life?

I used to shop every other day at my favorite stores buying tons of clothes. That has all come to a stop. Now, I try to stick to a shopping list of the grocery items that my husband and I need. We try to buy store brand items too or clip coupons as often as possible. Finally, we stay home to conserve gas and only go out a handful of times if absolutely necessary.

How about you?

I don't know if it's the economy, but I have indeed begun to think twice before buying "luxury" items such as DVDs and clothes and stuff.

I have fewer responsibilities than most. I don't have student debt. I am not married. I don't own a house or a car. My parents are alive and healthy. I have no children.

I'm essentially as free of responsibility as I'll ever be.

But I was out of a job for two months last fall and it taught me the value of savings... So, yeah, I think twice before I buy stuff now.

I've always been thrifty when it came to grocery shopping, but I've definitely cut down on my going out to bars on a regular basis.

I only go clothes shopping about twice a year maybe. I am moving to Vancouver in a few weeks so I would probably have more light sprees. I rarely buy dvd's I only buy my favorites. I rarely go to bars and I usually only have 1 or 2 drinks. I only buy food I know I will eat. Plus I don't buy video games as much as I used to.

I'm actually lucky if I even have money for bills. What I do have left usually goes to food and maybe something "extravagant" like a dvd or something if it's something I want.

Well, that's another place where I'm lucky. I've never been much of anywhere, let alone lived there, but I have heard that Montreal is one of the most affordable cities to live in.

Mind you, it doesn't feel like it sometimes. But, especially when I compare rents and public transportation fares... I do seem to have it lucky on that front.

In the past year I manage to get three part-time jobs but I'm still broke. I have college, food, and transportation to worry about. I'm living with my mother just because she is not charging me rent.

I'll be in the Vancouver area one of the most unaffordable cities to live in. I don't have a car but looking at todays gas prices I am glad.

When grocery shopping, me and my family buy generic instead of name brand, and always stick to a list.

I'm still as frugal as ever. The only thing that has changed is that more people are noticing my ways and trying to do the same.

That is what I have to do as a college student. It's pretty difficult as a vegetarian -- meaning I HAVE to buy certain things to avoid ... dying.

Also -- I avoid driving as much as possible.

My boyfriend and I also only allow ourselves to eat out once a week. Hard to keep, but it makes it so much cheaper.
