Texas to ban gay foster parents

Quote:
The Texas House of Representatives passed a bill banning homosexuals, bisexuals and transsexuals from being foster parents.
Now if that wasn't bad enough

Quote:
If the bill gains approval from the Texas Senate, the state will be allowed to investigate the backgrounds of current foster parents and remove children living in non-heterosexual households.

I'm sure that'll be just wonderful for kids. You've been living with gay parents for years and that's all you know and then you're suddenly ripped away. Alot of kids as it is now never even make it out of foster care and tehy're just making sure even more never make it out of there. Way to go!

Note to self, never visit Texas.

Homophobia is going full steam ahead in this country. It's really scary.

You thought they were just concerned about gay marriage? Hell no!! THey want to stop homosexuals from adopting, restrict them from receiving partner benefits at work, and allowing doctors to refuse to treat them (a bill like this actually passed the House of Representatives in Michigan).

Things are pretty out of control. Maybe you don't want gay marriage, but once you go past that I'll call it what is is- BIGOTRY. I can now see how people hated blacks so much in the early to mid-1900's.

In positive news, Connecticut just passed a law allowing civil unions. Why can't all states just compromise and allow civil unions?

I really don't understand why governments are controlling something that is clearly a moral issue. If you feel that homosexuality is immoral or sinful, then that's your opinion. You shouldn't force opinions on others. The majority of homosexuals don't even choose to be that way, they're just born that way and/or end up that way and can't really help it, and authorities are condemning them for something that they can't even help or change. They're punishing them for being different, even though their difference isn't hurting anyone or changing much of anything at all. It's just a matter of opinion and for a lot of people it's actually a matter of religious beliefs as well. I thought religion and state were supposed to be separated?? Only in a perfect world...

Le sigh. There was once a time when Texas could be proud of things, like LBJ and... LBJ. I think that this is horribly discrimatory, but you know? Take it from somebody who has lived in the forsaken state all of her life - it's better to live somewhere else. All the gay foster parents should take in some lucky kids in Illinois or something.

Though, don't give up all hope in the lone star state just yet. There's still Austin, quite a liberal city. Many a Kerry supporter, many a gay pride parade (or at least they had 'coming out week 2005').

Heh, don't worry, you live in a great state. It's not the state that's got problems, it's the people running it .

I would think that this law would be deemed unconstitutional, but who knows?

That's what i'm thinking. Most states have a hard time getting children adopted as it is, and now you're going to cut that number down even more by prevents gays from getting those kids? There's nothing that benefits the kids in that, you're just forcing kids out of a home where they're being loved. And I always thought that was the main goal for a kid in foster care, to put them in a home where they would be loved. Apparently I was wrong.

I would comment on this, but I am so infuriated that I don't think what I have to say would be appropriate for FF.

yes, because it doesn't matter that these people are loving and caring enough to open up their homes to children in need, Homosexuals couldn't possibly be trusted with children because they are evil, immoral sodomites and heathens!

yeah.

And perhaps worse than that is a well know fact that homosexual couples that do adopt or foster are more likely to take in special needs children: Children who are often overlooked by heterosexual couples. So where is the care or compassion? Or since many special needs children are born drug-addicted and if not recipients of love and care doomed to a life of drugs and crime is then the Texas jail system subject to yet even more over-crowding? In a state like Texas where there's capital punishment are we then subjecting children whose foundational base of any crime is that they never were given a chance at anything remotely like love do we then put them to death?
