| China passing a law saying it's going to attack Taiwan if the little nation moves toward independence... and Europe almost lifted its arms embargo on China, would have started selling China arms to attack Taiwan with if Bush hadn't weighed in against that. __________________ Free Tibet. | Sadly, big nations against little nations isn't a new thing. I hadn't known about Europe going to sell China weapons, but I'm *choke* glad Bush stopped it. *shudders* We all have to look back to World War I, where Britian went in to "defend Belgium and the rights of all small nations" yet ruthlussy supressed the Irish only two years after that document. __________________ Is this because I'm a lesbian? | |||

| I have to back up the Taiwanese in here. I guess it's typical to root for the underdog, but that's always been how I think. I think their spirit towards this movement is impressive and I hope that they will be able to get what they want and peacefully at that. __________________ | |||

I think I recall from my last history course that the US (and maybe other countries) - have promised Taiwan long ago that, while they support China as well nowadays, they will help Taiwan if China "tries anything". Which I suppose they haven't, yet - but this law has to be seen as a major provocation (sp?). __________________ Blessed are the merciful The world is not black-and-white. Nothing is simple.

but it seems unlikely that taiwan will gain independence..no country is willing to go against the rising economic and overall power of China just to support little ol' taiwan. all the countries taiwan actually has diplomatic relations with are all small little islands/unimportant countries. they need international support, but it doesn't seem quite bright for them. __________________ i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart) and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart
