Susan Sontag dead at 71/Shirley Chisholm dies at 80

Now, that feels like the end of an era - or a beginning?

In any case, given all the recent tragedy of the world I suppose it's not BIG news, but it does mean something to me as she was such a driving force of pop culture, etc.

Here's the Associated Press item.

ETA - Here's the CNN item.

It's just that I never knew what the big deal about her was until I heard her speak when I was an undergrad, back in the mid-80s. She was so dynamic and funny, a real tour-de-force.

Thanks for posting this, shrrshrr. Susan Sontag was definitely a pioneer and a great writer, and an era has definitely ended with her passing.

I didn't always "get" her either. But I enjoyed her plays and writings.

I was sad to hear she had passed away.

Look - I realize that with the tsunami disaster and war in Iraq these passings might not seem all that significant, but if you're living in the US then you should know how important and instrumental these two women were to the second half of the 20th century. Their passing should be noted.

Article on Shirley Chisholm.

I keep trying to edit the thread title to include the phrase, "Shirley Chisholm dies at 80," but it's not taking for some reason... Can anyone help me, please?

I edited the title.

I remember Shirley Chisholm very well, and she certainly was another pioneer in her time. May she rest in peace.

Thanks, Jerry!

And I agree - both women meant so much to my youth... I just wish people knew and understood how much, especially Shirley Chisholm, they mean to our society - and the place of women and people of color - today.

The fact that only 3 people have posted here says a lot, doesn't it? And it's not good...

I agree shrr. I find it sad when a topic about an exploding penis gets more posts than a topic about the passing of two women who had a tremendous impact on our society.

There's a post about an exploding penis? I didn't even notice that!

I think it's because I generally look at the hard-hitting "political" threads and ignore the others.

Shirley Chisholm's funeral was today and many hundreds of people (other than those 3000 or so in the church) stood outside to hear the eulogy because she meant so much to people of color.

I mean - she was the first black woman in congress, and no one's even bothered to look in tis thread.

I just read the biography of Susan Sontag, and wow, I am impressed! I'm a writer too, so to read about how many publications she has and how much recognition she's gotten is awesome I don't believe I've read anything of hers before, but maybe I'll look into it ...

Thanks for sharing I'm sorry I didn't notice her until her death, unfortunately
